He stepped up and it's the second one we missed, so yes he does get the blame. If our goalkeeper kept coming for crosses and missed the every time , he would get the blame. CMS has also got stick for not playing well. Everybody body is in agreement that we need to convert our chances, so if players are not, then look around the bench and find someone who will. Keep playing him is not changing anything is it? That includes CMS

I guess to a degree I'm generalising. There are a few odd people who will take any chance to criticise CMS, but on the whole, he doesn't get the widespread criticism some of our other players would get for the same things. After barnes missed his penalty v Leicester (and went on to be praised for his performance in the rest of the match by the commentators so it's not because he was generally poor) a thread was started laying into him for that penalty miss. No one started one when CMS missed his penalty v leeds. So, while individuals may have acknowledged his miss cost us points, on the whole he was excused his miss.

Yes, he got dogs abuse towards the end of last season, but, that reiterates my point - he failed to score in the last 11 games last season. He has started this season with 9 in 15, so people aren't criticising him yet. It's only been three games since he last scored, so people are easy on him at the moment, generally speaking.

One thing never cease to amaze me on here and that is how Barnes top fans seem to think that his critics desperately want him to fail. I hope Dobbie or Hoskins gets a chance tonight but if Gus sticks with Ashley then I hope he bangs a couple in. I support the Abion not individual players.if he does play a blinder I might well get a bit of stick from my mates who adore him but what the heck, I won't be pissed off trust me.

And on the flip side, I don't understand why all the Barnes haters think that anyone who defends him thinks he's the greatest player to ever walk this Earth. They don't.

My problem Commander is with the monotonous line that he comes back and helps out in defence at set players. Any forward over 5ft 8 in does that generally with your speedster left up front. Jesus I can go back to the 60sy and reel off names galore of strikers who came back. its not a new phenomenon . I even remember Kit Napier heading away a corner once..... Honest.

I can assure you that several people near where I sit think exactly that. That's why they boo his name before the game starts, point out errors he hasn't even made yet, and get very excited when they think he's injured. Plenty of room for them in the away end.

All 'forwards' need to be prepared to defend and not that long ago CMS headed a certain goal off the line. Since it has been mentioned, the second Leeds pen. was subject to the most appalling piece of gamesmanship ever and Paddy Kenny is a disgrace.

Selecting any player just for the reason that he comes back to defend seems to me wrong as, if there is a specific weakness in deputy/replacement at left back or wherever, the problem lies in not having a competent stand in and that is a squad problem.

Players should be selected for what they are going to contribute in the role they have been picked for and, unless there are extenuating circumstances, that is what their performance should be judged upon.

I have my own thoughts on Ashley Barnes which I have not aired for some time but I think Saturdays performance should mean a dropping for a period of time.

I really don't like to become involved in some of the binfests which occur on NSC but would if pressed.

No doubt he will still get abuse.

Just out of interest, who will everyone blame if he doesn't play and the defence switch off AGAIN to concede?

You'll never see Barnes score the winner ali jenkins as he's been removed from penailty dutys .

If only Gus had that luxury of having players, who were excellent at their specialist positions, in the meantime, in the real world.

Well it seems he hasn't had confidence in Painter since last season and has seen Calderon as a suitable deputy on a number of occasions prior to Bridge arriving.

There are numerous options o deal with the weakness on the left in Bridge's absence and in my eyes deploying Barnes to protect the full back is unfair on him - he's far better in a central striking or central withdrawn role - it's making him look poor and the criticism is justified.

Interestingly something not many people appear to have touched on is his temperament. He rarely accepts decisions, has at times been a liability a la Greer (Burnley at home - if you agree or not with the decision to send him off is irrelevant he still reacted stupidly albeit to extreme provocation and was sent off) and could learn to chase down the lost cause a la CMS a lot more than he does.

Redknapp made an interesting quote today upon joining QPR in that he has no time in his side for players who sulk, throw up their arms at poor decisions and wait standing around with their hands on their hips. He wants fighters and team players.

Barnes would last five seconds under Redknapp and has to learn that until his Body is able to cash the cheques his misplaced ego are writing then a spell on the sidelines would not be unfair.

CMS and Barnes have missed chance after chance after chance for over a year now and cost points as a result. This current Albion side create more chances than I can ever remember, but the forwards are just so wasteful. You cant have forwards needing 5 clear cut chances a game to score one goal a game between them. If this side had a Ward or Zamora or even a Nelson or a Murray then we would be banging the goals in. Our midfield must just shake their heads at the wasteful forward line, after all, what more can they do but create 5 or 6 clear cut chances a game? Of course when they get so many chances they will score some goals but they have failed together. Maybe one of Barnes or CMS with a proper fox in the box would be a good balance but together, they miss too many chances week in week out to be our front line. From what I have seen CMS is better than Barnes and so it should be CMS and someone else should be given a chance.
