It wasn't about switching off in the last few minutes. It was about the fact that we should have been 4-0 up by then, and switching off for an injury time goal wouldn't have mattered.

It was the bucketful of missed chances (some of them Barnes and some of them from others) that bloody cost us.

Although that penalty was woeful, including the follow up.

Straight from the horses mouth. Barnes said he doesn't think he'll be starting tonight.

That's a NSC EXCLUSIVE!

In 11 seasons of Premier League football the conversion rate of penalties was 79.06%, so 4 out of 5 is par for the course.

Anyone looking at how many points we've dropped fails to factor in the '20% missed' element. In practice, NO side scores 100% of its penalties year in, year out. For us, 2 out of 5 should really be 4 out of 5 normally.

What's all this nonsense about whoever misses the penalty will get the blame if we fail to win? CMS missed his v Leeds resulting in a draw, he didn't get any criticism for it.

If someone misses a penalty any blame he gets will depend on who it is:

CMS, Dobbie, Buckley, Bridcutt - it'll be "wow, we really have bad luck with penalties"
Greer, Dicker, Painter, Barnes (suppose he gets a couple and a pen is a chance for a hat-trick probably the only way he'd get to take it) - it'll be "[player] is so shit! why is he even taking them, should be back in the reserves for some non-league team"

There has been a MASSIVE amount of CMS bashing on here at times, so I hardly think that the abuse is singled out to the players you have listed above.

You are right about Buckers tho, the man can do no wrong!

Could well be a blessing if he does start tonight and gets his fifth booking then that would rule him out of Saturday's MASSIVE match...

Here's hoping for an Ashley Barnes goal and the removal of his shirt celebration tonight!

I'm heartened by the fact Reading missed 6 from 8 and still went up.

The CMS bashing starts after 7-10 games without a goal. Barnes bashing goes on even when he scores, Dicker Greer and Painter bashing goes on despite good/successful performances.

People have been paving the way for Greer to become a serious panto bad guy at the club for a few weeks now, as soon a Barnes is dropped, GG is getting both barrels.
I agree with your sentiment, but I'm still struggling to come to terms with how/why it will happen.

Yeah, I'd hate him to be at Selhurst and do as well as he did last season.

He stepped up and it's the second one we missed, so yes he does get the blame. If our goalkeeper kept coming for crosses and missed the every time , he would get the blame. CMS has also got stick for not playing well. Everybody body is in agreement that we need to convert our chances, so if players are not, then look around the bench and find someone who will. Keep playing him is not changing anything is it? That includes CMS

Ok I will bite on this one.

CMS - Got dogs abuse at the end of last season, with untold people calling for him to go and that he is crap. He has started this season a lot more brightly, has missed a few but looks sharp and with the right strike partner will start scoring.

Barnes - Sometimes plays well, and more often puts in a poor performance. Yes he tracks back etc, but he is a forward player who really needs to be a bit more clinical on goal. His final ball is also often lacking, and as for the penalty and rebound last week, well we have discussed that enough.

Dicker - Seems to play well more often than not IMO and not sure why he gets so much stick.

Painter - My gran runs faster than him. Journeyman league 1 defender.

Greer - Normally looks fairly solid but can be prone to some amazing errors at times. I am not a Greer basher though but do think we could do with somebody else at captain.

Anyhow if the question is why does Barnes get so much stick, I believe the answer lies that his occasional good perfomances are marred by the majority of poor performances he puts in, and that the errors he makes are often costly. By no means do I think he is rubbish, but he is not the sort of player that we need if we are going to challenge for the Prem. If he is in front of goal you have no idea what will happen next. Blast over, lashed wide, air shot? At least with CMS you can be confident that he will either hit the target, or be extremely close. You cannot say this with Barnes.

Still he scored a few last season, and I hope if Gus keeps playing him that he can put in a few good performances so NSC can get back some of its positivity it had not so long ago.

the idea seems to be that Barnes is alright cause he does the ugly things, the things people don't really see, I just don't get it i don't want my forward doing that that's not a forwards job I want him scoring goals creating chances and banging away penalties

dobbie must be shaking his head sitting on the bench thinking what am i doing here

Dobbie was doing exactly that I sit near the dug out and I saw his face he was fuming I don't blame him either!!

If we are going to challenge for the Prem then none of the above will be good enough. Poyet is gradually changing the team to the standard that he wants it to be.
As for not knowing what Barnes will do next in front of goal, I see that as a good thing as defenders can't read him either and makes him more likely to score. CMS has skied a few that I can remember. Nsc hasn't had its positivity since we started losing in Sept 2011.

Not sure I agree that none of those players are good enough to challenge for the Prem, but do take your point about Gus gradually changing the team. As for not knowing what Barnes will do in front of goal, I would rather have a bit of confidence that he will hit the target at least.

If I had to bet my mortgage on Barnes or CMS hitting the target from identical positions I know where my money would go.

this side taking malarky with the whole love hate stance people have with barnes is all a bit pointless... i have always been a fan of barnesy but even i will admit that in recent weeks he has put in some shocking performances. but then again i will over-joyed if he smashes in a winner tonight. its the fickle nature of football i guess.. lets just get behind the team tonight.
