their blinkered to that sort of evidence bushy ,tart it up as much as you want but what you've posted is the truth.

We built an empire over two centuries that made this country an economic super power.

The role of Asian, African and West Indian land, labour, resources and markets were fundamental to this.

The fact that the peoples of the Empire chose to make livelihoods within the home of this empire is a natural consequence of that which too few people are prepared to accept.

In the same way that British have created ex-pat communities across the globe. Too many Brits are fundamentally hypocrites in their views on these matters.

The NF had a stall every game outside the Northwest corner. The SWP had theirs about 50 yards away, considering Tyndale(NF leader)lived off Portland road you would think that the NF would have had more success, but Brighton has always been a more tolerant town.We had our Nazi's and our Commies neither really prospered at the Goldstone.

Not burying my head in the sand. I think there is a substantial difference between the immigration of many communities you described from 50s - 80s. Commonwealth related immigration and fundamentally.communities that have established themselves.

Contrast this with the transient EU/African economic migration that has occured in the last decade.

They are quite distinct with different associated issues. The reason why the political/business forces don't object so much is because they provide a cheap labour force likely to accept sub standard employment terms. Welcome to globalised economics. A process we set in motion and which is now turning on many of us.

I seem to recall it happening at the orient game too? I could be wrong.

Along with the fella that tried to karate kick Ray Wilkins, who promptly stepped back and the bloke flew past him. Still makes me laugh to this day, that bit.

There is no comparison with the 70s to the 80s .Things were different in the 70s and unless you lived in them you cannot comment on why people lived the way they did .

They generally work longer hours and harder than us 'locals' so good luck to them. Must admit tho, when I watched a BBC news programme this morning coming from a school about the latest computers for teaching, virtually every pupil was from Indian/Pakistan/African communities. Living in Sussex I still find this a bit of a shock. Perhaps its my age (56). Before anyone slags me off I would point out my eldest son is married to a lovely Chinese girl and I am a proud Grand dad to their son.

Are you referring to our 3-0 win which relegated them from Div 1 in 1982?

Nice story Major, but like most of what goes on in your head, based on fantasy.

Palace were relegated from Division One on the 5th April 1981 after results involving other teams went against them. Their previous game was a 1-0 defeat away to Man Utd on the 4th April.

The 3-0 defeat to the Weed was two games later.

In fairness, it doesn't. It says much more about the time.

The point has been made elsewhere that racist chants were seen as 'banter' then. The NF handed out leaflets at the north stand turnstiles whilst standing next to a policeman. As strange and disgusting as it seems now it was pretty normal then. Of course we all know better now, society has moved forward.

Obviously homophobic chanting is still 'banter' but thankfully racism is now totally unacceptable everywhere and at all levels.

I wonder if the next generation will share your reaction to songs such as 'does your boyfriend know your here'? I rather suspect (and hope) so

But abc the racist chanting may have been "banter" to some fans but for others it was part of a deliberate targeting of individuals - black players - who were subjected to bananas regularly being thrown at them, monkey chanting and other abuse, all of which is well documented. Ask John Barnes and the other black players if they thought it was just a bit of banter...

Not really, listen to yourself , imposing YOUR standards and views as gospel , what do you class as racist , someone like me who is pissed off at the 800,000 odd illegal immigrants that they have today admitted they've lost track of, god knows how many are really here , someone like me who sees absolutely no benefit whatsoever in the huge amount of african immigration into this country in the last 15 years ? Someone like me who sees large parts of our inner cities and mill towns turned into mini versions of pakistan or bangladesh ? I'm just sick of people like you decreeing what we are allowed to think and say and woe betide anyone , such as charlies shinpad who stray from the accepted doctrine of such experts as yourself no-one in their right mind condones racist attacks and all the rest of it , but i'm not going to be bullied into keeping silent about my views because peopl,e like you deem them unnaceptable , we've even had posters on this thread declaring " what a wanker i was back then " , no he wasnt , he behaved by what was acceptable as the standards of the time .

Yes it was that match, and it was not all from Palace. John Gregory decided to ignore his duties at right back as usual and scored twice. We followed that by victories against Leicester, Sunderland and Leeds to avoid relegation.

Brighton was far from the worst place though, I went to watch Blackburn play Villa in the 90's with some mates, and Villa had Ian Taylor, Dalian Atkinson, Earl Barrett, Mark Walters, Gary Charles, Paul McGrath and Savo Milosevic.

I was in the Blackburn end and one of their HILARIOUS redneck fans shouted as Villa were passing it about "Ni**er to Ni**er to Ni**er to Ni**er to Commie", and his equally intellectually challenged pasty red faced overweight chums thought this the funniest thing they had ever heard by the way they guffawed.

Compared to the former mill towns of the north, Brighton is a far more tolerant place.

Compared to the former mill towns of the North Nazi Germany was a fairly tolerant place.

I remember staying in Burnley after we played them a while back. The whites universally despise the Asians and vice versa. Odd times.

To avoid derailing this thread I have started another addressing the myth(?) of Brighton relegating Palace propagated by The Major.
