What have mosques in Blackburn got to do with race? Islam is a religion and accepts members of any race. There are churches all over too. Christianity came from the same area as Islam.
Plenty, the amount of native british muslims is negligible , but you knew that really and were being deliberately obtuse.

Not compared to London or some other places but deffo loads more than there was even 10 years ago. Time was that you rarely saw any black people in Brighton except the day trippers. Not so now. We don't have many black supporters though which is indicative that most of our support is drawn from the locals rather than incomers.

I was recently at Stamford bridge...there is a proper cross section of London faces there and a much more representative ethnic mix.
Yes , it's full of passionless, johnny come lately wankers of every colour and creed now.

Personally I thought racism was abhorrent then and still do now.

Funny how this has turned into a Bushy and his views on immigration and culture thread.
:)

I was in the Blackburn end and one of their HILARIOUS redneck fans shouted as Villa were passing it about "Ni**er to Ni**er to Ni**er to Ni**er to Commie", and his equally intellectually challenged pasty red faced overweight chums thought this the funniest thing they had ever heard by the way they guffawed.
There were a few occasions when I heard that at Withdean. Back of H Block. I don't believe it was the seventies.

It was. Just not policed stringently for some reason.
There was one black lad at our school and as I grew up, he was the only one I knew. Only ever saw black people playing football or on tv so he was a bit of a celebrity to us!

Yes, I've really monopolised this thread with 10 posts out of 166, unsurprisingly you dont mount any form of argument against my posts , instead just making a nondescript comment that you think its turned into a thread about my views on immigration and culture , i'm not sure if you've made the link , but i'd say that racism/immigration/culture are relatively closely connected topics.

I remember a regular chant from the old north stand...." there's a black bitch on the pitch..la la lalalaaaaaa"

I would also tend to agree that it was more a northern thing, although when we were at gillingham we played millwall in the mickey mouse cup and Bennett, our black player at the time got fearful abuse from people sat around us. And his family were two rows away....it was disgusting and the stewards did nothing about it at all.

Are the jcl's the new immigrants as they are treated like the immigrants were in the 70's???
And aren't the closet racists that we have today very relieved that they can still get away with chanting bile, using codewords like "northern", "pikey", "sheepshagger" "boyfriend", etc? I suppose it gets it out of their system and they feel content to be surrounded by the warmth of bigotry that is so difficult to express elsewhere these days.

I didn't say you'd monopolised the thread.

Yes I am aware of the links between immigration, culture and racism. I'm also aware of the links between racism, ignorance, economics and history.

I haven't responded to your posts because there's no point. It's been done to death.

Yet you still feel the need to comment on them.

Northern is not really a race though. Sheepshagging too is more of a lifestyle choice than an ethnic grouping. Boyfriend and pikey are pejorative but considered witty asides.

If you took all of those lighthearted abusive terms away we would be left critiquing each others hairstyles or dress sense and then we would be Swiss.

Football would be far less rewarding were it not for bigotry and loathing.

I think you will find alot of people who didn't want mass immigration are the last people to spout vile abuse,if they all had in the 60's and 70's immigration might have had a different outcome, just because people didn't want population movement on a huge scale didn't mean they were up for genocide, the nf probably made it easier for immigration as people did not want to align themselves with people of hate.As we say its a different world and the attitudes of my parents are not the same as my children.

Was that a guy by the name of Manny or something similar? A very good young footballer.

No he was a Bevendean boy called Pete and he used to follow the Albion from the North Stand. He went on to be an engineer I believe. Good lad.

Considering the general social and economic conditions in Brighton, it's very easy to be.

but the point is we are on the whole not considering it. its all about telling yourself you are better than others, irrespective of conditions that might shape behaviours, which perversely is not dissimilar to racism.

Really? I sat in H Block for the whole time we were there and never heard anything like that. Every time I saw you you were hanging around on the running track or talking to Harty I don't remember seeing you at the back with the ruffians.

That's shocking.

But abc the racist chanting may have been "banter" to some fans but for others it was part of a deliberate targeting of individuals - black players - who were subjected to bananas regularly being thrown at them, monkey chanting and other abuse, all of which is well documented. Ask John Barnes and the other black players if they thought it was just a bit of banter...

Absolutely. It was wrong, racist and severely crossed the 'banter line'. But it was, at that time, consider acceptable by most including those in authority. Thankfully as a society we now know better.

I was trying to point out the irony that whilst we all agree that there is no such things as acceptable racist banter it seems most people think that homophobic 'banter' is. This suggests that we have learnt nothing from the past. Also I suspect one day there will be a similar thread discussing with incredulity that homophobic chanting was acceptable in the early 2000's.

Personally I can no longer see any defence for any chanting that is designed to cause offence to another.

Brighton factually.....
I remember I think it was Bas savages first game against Orient on a cold Febuary 2007 night when we won 4-1 and Bas even scored. He was getting stick from some very pissed up Albion morons shouting abuse at him along the lines of Monkey this and that followed by there aint no black in the union jack. This with Bas`s family behind us higher up, I was ashamed as they looked down in our direction thinking we were all the same. I even caught the I think his dads or older relatives eye and shook my head and he smiled shrugged his shoulders as if it always happens. No one deserves such abuse and catching someones eye that it effects and his respone made me think I am glad I am white, only beause I could not to go through what these people do. I know I would not be able to be dignified and able to calm with what they have gone through there whole life, I would have killed someone by now.
