if they chanted ' we can see you holding hands'- does that mean we cant reply ' you are too ugly to be gay' ?
Both men were ordered to pay £50 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
Who to? The Dirk Bogarde Memorial Fund?

I was very offended by Albion fans chanting to a Millwall player you fat Bas%$ard. I have a thyroid condition which
means I am very overweight and I was also born without a Father. So I will be making a complaint if hear this chant again.
And there lies one of the two differences between such a chant and the homophobic chants which are the subject of this thread - it was aimed at the player not the fans.
The second and more important difference is that it has not been democratically decided that uttering phrases such as "fat Bas%$ard" in public should be a criminal offence - if you feel strongly enough that it should be then you need to campaign for a change in the law.
Couple of questions?
What's the difference between offensive chants aimed at players and fans.
When was it democratically decided that homophobia is a criminal offence?

The difference between a chant aimed at a player and one aimed at fans is that in the situation described a report by a fan that they were personally offended bears little weight.
It was democratically decided that homophobic actions and speech made in public are a criminal offence when democratically elected representatives in Parliament passed into law The Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill that contains a clause creating the offence of incitement to hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation.
Not sure I get the difference, I don't know the facts of this case are but why would a fan reporting being personally offended by a chant have less weight than if the same complaint was made by a player?
Thanks for clearing up the last point, I know our democratically elected representatives only ever pass into statute laws that will benefit society and they should never be challenged because after all, they are democratically elected.
It always surprises me that some people don't understand that principle..................life is so much simpler when you do isn't it?
Think this thread has gone on long enough , and I am adding . I could not give a damn what people shout at me , let them , I will give it back . It was many times worse in the 70's and 80's , did me no harm even as a kid .
My opinion , no one will change it
You have accepted that things have changed since the '70s
So what basis have you to claim that the current culture won't change in the future?
I did not say it won't change in the future Creaky , just my opinion won't change about what people chant at me , I could not care less what they shout . I think it will change in the future , just hope it won't get so sterile that you can't sing anything . When will it be illegal to call somebody bald or fat , when will it be illegal to swear at football matches , when will it be illegal to call a player crap ? Just hope the authorities don't ruin football , perhaps we should all dress in cotton wool before we go to a game then they may be happy .
surely fans chanting 'homophobic' comments to [ i presume] mostly straight blokes is an empty insult and therefore meaningless..
When parliament passed the relevant Acts. Although I think homophobia (like racism) is still legal - as long as you keep quiet about it.Couple of questions?
