While the general point is valid, it’s not quite fair. Here’s the text of a speech made in the Senate by Chris Murphy, junior Senator for Connecticut:

“As we speak, there is a horrific scene playing out at a high school in South Florida. Turn on your television right now, you're going to see scenes of children running for their lives. It’s what looks to be the [18]th school shooting in this country, and we have not even hit March.

I'm coming to the floor to talk about something else, but let me just note once again for my colleagues: this happens nowhere else other than the United States of America. This epidemic of mass slaughter, this scourge of school shooting after school shooting.

It only happens here not because of coincidence, not because of bad luck, but as a consequence of our inaction. We are responsible for a level of mass atrocity that happens in this country with zero parallel anywhere else.

No it isn't. I work for a US company who are a constituent of the S&P 500; employees start out with 10 days vacation. After 5 years, you get an extra five days and after 10 years you get another 5 days, making 20 days in total (for a 10-year veteran).

The vast majority of US companies (in my expereince) give 10 days vacation as a starting point.

Because it's these online, social media shaming tactics that have created a counter culture that is growing around the world among the conservative side of western nations populations.

You're missing the point (as is probably 'some kid in Alabama') - the online criticism might not change opinions, but there appears to be a growing groundswell among the citizens of the US against the NRA and guns in general. It may take time, but ultimately, if and when NRA supporters no longer get elected to positions of power laws will be passed, and 'some kid in Alabama' will have to do what he's told. He might take out a few innocent citizens in the name of freedom, mom's apple pie and cup cakes before ending up in prison, but that day will come eventually if the current ground swell keeps on growing.

It'll take time to chip away at that most stoopid of country's gun laws . But the NRA can their apologists can have no sane answer to why any American citizen legitimately requires ownership of an assault rifle to protect their family.

The AR-15 seems to be the gun of choice in Missouri. Third graders (7 to 9 years old) were found selling raffle tickets for an AR-15 in a southwest Missouri town. Who can blame them when their governor prefers a bigger gun.

The government is afraid of the guns people have because they have to have control of the people at all times. Once you take away the guns, you can do anything to the people. You give them an inch and they take a mile. I believe we are slowly turning into a socialist government. The government is continually growing bigger and more powerful, and the people need to prepare to defend themselves against government control.

On Newsnight a couple of days ago there was some woman who was an NRA member or supporter and her argument was that gun control hadn't worked, and the problem was that the school didn't have adequate protection (i.e. guns themselves). So her solution was to arm more people, so that they can protect themselves. She suggested college (university) should be carrying guns around with them if necessary. How can you get through to someone like that?
