Interesting - I wonder if the same thing could happen at the Regency in Brighton, which is now exclusively doling the equally-foul Shepherd Neame. OK, the atmosphere has changed a bit too but the reason I don't go in there anymore is, obviously, because there's no H.
It's only round the corner from my office. The clientele has remained much the same - wine drinkers. They are one of those places that has the Leffe/Staropramen/Hoegaarden taps.

Needles to say, there are only Shepherd Neame beer in there now, and I feel it dishonourable to drink any of them, even if Spitfire is not that bad. Does this make me sad and tragic?

Which is why the Royal Oak is so shit. Other than that there isn't a single pub in Lewes that you can't get Harvey's. Does the Snowdrop sell it?

The Lewes Arms is my second favourite pub in Lewes.
The Snowy had Harvey's the last time I was there - which is a while back, since I stopped going when my (then) seventeen year old daughter started complaining that the place was "letting all those young kids in".

Harvey's has gone from the Black Horse too - another ex-Beard's house, now in the hands of Greene King.

It is very safe in the Gardener's Arms, though (where the former manager of the Lewes Arms is now running things).

Which brings me nicely onto my FAVOURITE pub in lewes :)

The guy who owns it (Fitz is it?) used to work with my Dad.

Top bloke is Andy Fitz. A Swindon Town supporters who organised a superb coach trip from the Gardeners' a few seasons back, when we were playing them away in the league.

A very early start, to allow us to fit in a seriously decent pub-crawl of Swindon in the four hours before kick-off.

I used to live next door but one to the Gardeners'

Didn't the pub flood the day after he bought it?

This is all very well folks, but getting back on topic, where is my city serving pub?

The Royal Oak has been shit since Dick and Peter Bennett left for the Trevor Arms.

None of the following have had Harveys on my last visits:

The Black Horse, The Meridian, The Volunteer, The Tally Ho.

And it's Greene King who have to be watched, because they are intent on removing Harvey's from their pubs.

Not entirely correct, based on my conversations with John Shuckburgh and David Carliss (former and current Area Managers for Greene King).

Greene King don't want Harveys sold in their tenanted or leasehold outlets, because they don't benefit from it - the landlord buys the beer off Harveys and retains any profit made on the sales as their personal income. In their managed houses, they're (generally) quite happy for it to continue being sold as Greene King buy the beer from Harveys, and also keep any money made on it. If the beer is selling well in a managed house, Greene King are benefitting from it, whereas they get nothing from a tenanted pub selling Harveys. Basically, it's just sound business sense. After all, how many Harveys houses do you see selling Greene King IPA?

On my last visit, it was a choice of Courage Directors or Courage Directors. I'm not overly bothered, though, cos it's a bloody awful pub.

True and to be fair my last visit was bonfire night...

Before Harvey's redeveloped the Dorset Arms, it went through a phase of being called the Manxman, when it welcomed nobody but rightwing political extremists.

The local branch of CAMRA got their own back by listing it in their local guide to real ale pubs with the information that live reggae music was played on Friday nights.
