Haemorrhoids

For around three months now I've been suffering from haemorrhoids. I've been to my doctor and he has burst two on my last couple of visits. The pain afterwards has been unbearable and felt like having a red hot poker up my bottom. Afterwards I usually bleed for around a week following treatment (not a lot but enough for me to have to use baby wipes).

I have two more which have developed recently through bowel straining. As I suffer from constipation, they just seem to be inevitable. Tried laxatives and powdered drinks but going to the toilet in the day makes the area worse. It can get incredibly itchy and have to have some privacy when I'm out and about to scratch; not easy at this time of year.

Has anyone on here had an operation to soften the rectum area or been cured of piles? I've never been embarrassed about seeing my GP or other specialists. Please PM me if you don't want to discuss this publicly.

Thanks and a happy Christmas.

Give this a try. Seriously.

If you want a cheap option, Amazon sell an Ikea children's footstool for £6.99 which is a cheaper option. @herecomesaregular is correct and these options are a little easier.

Some hospitals insist on this method, especially after surgery, to relieve straining.

Make sure that the GP has diagnosed it correctly. A couple of years ago I was told that I had severe piles following a nasty bout of gastro-enteritis and was in pain of an intensity I have never experienced before (hours of spasms after each movement). After some of my own research I suggested to him that I thought it may be a fissure and it was as the treatment for that worked really quickly. The advice on fibre and liquid intake is the same for both conditions but the pharmaceutical options are different. Also you can have both at the same time. I am not saying that this is the case with you but it turned out that I had about 6 weeks of agony that could have been avoided.

There is a real stigma around conditions like these but they are much more common than most people realise and can happen at all ages and to anyone.

My doctor has treated them OK but they got infected the last time I went so I'm reluctant to go back again too soon. Hospital treatment might be another option when I get into the new year and certainly a change in diet although I'm not overweight, don't drink much alcohol and try and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.

I'm going to have to do some research into fissures. Either way the pain seems inevitable again.

Have a very merry Christmas everyone and thanks for all contributions, whether serious advice or old jokes! :xmas:

Seriously now.

Get something like the Nutribullet and every morning for breakfast chuck in a handful of spinach, a sliced banana and whatever other fruit takes your fancy. Even better get all of this stuff from a farm shop (Falmer) rather than a supermarket. The nutrients especially anti-oxidants in fruit and veg start to depreciate as soon as they are picked. Add some water or coconut water which is what I use use as it makes a lovely drink.

This has numerous health benefits, one being much improved digestion. I know of several people where this has cleared up their piles.

Good luck.

I think I have a haemorrhoid that has returned near the top of my bottom. It's agony when I wipe it after a poo as it feels like sandpaper again. There's also a very small amount of blood every wipe. Maybe it's a coincidence coming off smoking - the body can react in very strange ways. I wasn't smoking them out of my @rse before any wag quips! Dear God, the thought of going to the doctors or hospital to have it or them burst again fills me with horror. I can still feel the pain over three years ago.

I know I shouldn't ignore it if it's causing me to lose blood. I'm not bunged up, more like two visits to the loo a day which maybe causing it, I really don't know. My diet is healthy with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, protein, carbohydrates and obviously the old fibre.

Any advice, read through the replies carefully and hope it disappears?

I'm going to have a really good feel about and see if I can locate the exact place. I'll wash my hands after! Yes, the doctors would be the most sensible move if it continues.

There's no pain like it once they develop.

Edit: Locate came up as Locadia in the predictive text. I don't know whether to laugh or cry! Both I think.

Yes. The cream seems to have made it worse though. Maybe there's an ingredient in that I'm allergic to.

That's a bugger.

Or possibly not

In seriousness, you have my sympathies. I try to treat my body as a shrine, but increasingly these days it is the sort of shrine that you offer up burnt sacrifices with.:thumbsup:

About ten years ago I had a terrible reaction to some spicy food whilst on holiday in Cornwall. I have suffered IBS on and off for years and developed, as a consequence, piles from all the straining etc. The agony was as you described and several doctors visits and trips to the hospital for investigations ensued. Thankfully nothing sinister was found but I was advised to undergo an operation to resolve the issue. I asked if there was any alternative, diet and lifestyle was mentioned but the consultant didn't offer much hope. I decided to try and alter my diet and exercise more in the hope an operation would not be necessary. Another thing I thought long and hard about was trying to keep calmer and when I felt the urge to go, resist mentally (I know that is not always possible! ). I was prescribed all manner of creams but like you, found they seemed to make things worse. I stopped taking creams, and when I went to the loo, always used wipes. Slowly, very slowly, the agony and irritation receded, the bloody things had really spoiled my life for several years. I have hardly had any problems now for a few years, and for that I am so grateful, there's a lot of good advice on this thread, what worked for me may not for you but I want to encourage you that these horrible symptoms can improve very dramatically given time and a little effort.
