Adams didnt buy Hawkins he signed him and all of the others on free transfers. He has now left however and we are left with a chairman with the financial ability to be a chairman of a professional club rather than Crawley or Lewes and that is not to degrade DK as he served us well doing what he could do best but he didnt have the finance to push us on when needed. Tony Bloom has.

I recall adams was given for this division money. Slade given a fortune in comparison to 8/10 of the teams in this division. However its a couple of years ago the adams transfers and this ins and outs pass me by. Yes there were alot of free transfers but that is not unusual these days as players are available on a free at the end of each season but you still have to out bid others for them. Agreed tho, Bloom is spending even more now, and Poyet will be judged on how he spends the money

The clearout needs to begin long before the Summer, even if its scope is limited by existing contracts to farming the likely candidates into the reserves or out on loan. If he leaves it til the Summer Gus is likely to find himself part of that clearout. The current defence will end up costing him his job, same as they did for Salde.

True, but Slade had the opportunity to shore up the defence but chose to spend the money on midfielders, including two useless loanees and a forward. I doubt Gus is as naive to just leave it as it is for much longer.

Surely an experienced Centre back and a quality creative midfielder ( experienced again) are needed at top of shopping list....( I remember that was what SALDE was saying just before he got the bullet)

I dont recall Davies and McNulty being free transfers?

Allegedly MA didnt want Davies but certain others did, not sure about McNulty didnt he arrive about the time we wre looking at Gannon as manager or just before so perhaps a sweatner to encourage JG to sign as manager.

Anyhow MA has now gone lets concentrate on Gus and what he can bring in during Jan I would like to see a central defender, right back (Hoyte due to go back in Jan and Whing isnt good enough, neither is Hoyte at the moment) and a Chippy or Nobby type midfielder. Think he may have covered the goalkeeper aspect and was just wondering who is at Spurs that he would have seen whilst No 2 who is not figuring in the first team squad.

I think we should go back shopping at Stockport for their goalkeeper (fon Williams) and their midfielder Baker. Should be able to get them for a decent price too.

Would agree with that and could do a lot worse than having look at Maurice Voltz ex Arsenal, Wimbledon and Fulham right back who is available as a short term plug for full back.

I think Virgo needs to move to another club asap, for his sake as much as ours.

Don't think we'll be getting £1 million for him this time!

Was it 1.5?

No, I dont think we will. That was a surreal transfer.

But, I think he could do with a fresh challenge. His return hasnt worked out for whatever reason.

dont matter
Those of you saying Whing's not good enough have very short memories, once he's fully match fit again, he can more than hold his own at this level.

Agree with you there! To be honest i've only seen both players a couple of times, but always hear about Fon Williams and what a good player he is. Obviously Baker got a hat trick at Withdean, and has scored a few this season, as well as another good goal on Saturday at Wycombe.
Could do a lot worse than those two!

And i think Gus will TRY and sell Hawkins, Mcleod, Virgo, Davies, Smith and livermore, even if we allow them to leave for very small fee's or even free transfers. Wouldnt be suprised if that lot go out on loan until the end of the season to free up some cash from wages etc, and make a decision then based on performances whilest out on loan.
