Can not understand why he has not been involved the last couple of months, when he played it's the only time we have had someone trying to get into tho box and score goals from central midfield. Navs has played well but still think a midfield three of bridcutt jfc and Vicente is the answer????

Totally agree, would love to see those three start tonight

He is 17 years old. It is not 'poor treatment' to develop him slowly. Alex Ferguson doesn't put players in the 1st team at 17, and nor should we. We have at least two or three experienced Championship players in his position, there is no way we should be throwing him in yet. He'll get his chance again, we don't want to ruin him. If Gus (who sees him every day in training) doesn't think he's ready yet, then that's good enough for me.

I don't think he could have got more than a spot on the bench once Vicente got fit. Midfield 3 of Vicente, JFC and Bridcutt, just wouldn't win enough ball for me.

Quite. After Macheda burst onto the scene with those 2 goals v Villa, did Fergie do "right, he's ready for a whole season now".

Nope.

Same with Giggs, same with Scholes, same with Beckham etc etc etc. I think Gus brings the young players in really well. He gives them two or three games in the first team for some experience, then it's back to the development squad to keep learning, and keep developing. Once they are ready, he brings them in. Dunk came in at 19 and did well, I wouldn't expect to see JFC regularly until that age.

It's all a far cry from our old tactics of chucking some kid who had done well in the youth team into the first team, and then when he doesn't set the world alight after 10 games the crowd turn on him and ruin him, sending his career into a downward slide and off into non league. We don't need to risk that anymore.

Agreed, JFC will be being managed well, as well as his expectations. He got thrown into a 'big' game against Newcastle and was pretty poor, so Gus took him out of the limelight to let him develop a bit more. We'll see more cameo performances next season I suspect, but he is probably 1-2 seasons away from being ready for a big run. I can't even imagine being 16/17 years old and playing first team football, considering what most men of that age are like.

Poyet has also said none of the development squad will feature tonight.

Whilst he is a good prospect, it's also worth considering that he only really got called up due to injury troubles. To be honest having a 17 year old playing regularly in the first team, with all the pressure that involves, seems far more like poor treatment than not including him.

This is a really good example of how we supporters shouldn't over-interpret based on what we see and hear.

We have no idea how Jake is being 'managed'; that's a day-to-day thing, of which first team matches (the bit that we see) are a small part.

Exactly this; another example of how to handle a young player, and closer to home, is the Scummers and Adam Lallana. He didn't become a regular in their first team until he was 20, three years after making his debut.

Don't blame Gus for this.... The FA are to blame for scrapping the 7 sub rule to just 5! I'm sure that if he could have been named as a sub on a regular basis then he would have had more game time this season!!!

Gus does know what he's doing most of the time you know.

Seriously hope this is just a poorly thought through comment and not friends or family inspired; which I very much doubt!

Is that reverting to 7 next season?

I think its fair to say that JFC would have been involved in far more squads were it not for that PATHETIC and nonsensical rule brought in by the FL last year to cut the number of subs from 7 down to 5.

With only 4 outfield places on the bench its always going to be extremely rare for any member of the development squad to get his feet wet with the 1st team. One of two of them could have been picking up valuable experience this season at least being involved in the 1st team squad, even if they rarely got off the bench. Instead, Gus has obviously got to have established 1st-teamers only on the bench.

If the FL saw sense and reversed this pointless rule, then the likes of JFC and Agdestein would undoubtedly get the odd run-out from the bench when the time is right, and not just against non-leaguers in the Cup or when we are crippled with injuries/suspensions.

Gus did state when the sub rule changed from 7 to 5, that it specifically effect players such as JFC. He did well when we were short due to discipline & injury problems. Got to be careful with him or he'll potentially end up like our other Jake.
