Why say that? Seriously, it's a fans' forum, what are you expecting? A Sunday morning referee once said to me (after I'd had a go at him once too often) - "mate, if either of us were any good, we wouldn't be here would we?". Same goes for NSC.
Brilliant, bet that made you go a bit quiet ;)

Playing a more direct style, doesn't mean having to play hoofball.

Hear hear! Hasn't Poyet himself been saying he's in the hunt for a different type of striker? Glory be - he seems to know that we need a Plan B (which we didn't have last year) that might get us points away at places like Barnsley and Middleborough. Hitting the ball 30 or 40 yards isn't necessarily hoof-ball - anyone who thinks Gerrards 35 yarder straight on to Andy Carroll's head in the Euros qualifies as 'hoof-ball' needs their head examining. And in Vicente, we've got a player who can do the Gerrard part of that move.

Thats the positive I have taken from pre-season and the search for a target man. Although many on here do defend Poyets one plan approach last season, it does appear the man himself is making noises along the lines of being able to change style when needed. If he does land his target man (Heskey is my bet) then it would appear he is willing to go more direct when needed. There will be some confused NSCers on here if Poyet does have a plan b up his sleeve for next season.

i dont think theres a difference in what he wanted to do last season..if he had the material to do it...he has said himself he wanted to be able to adopt a different approach if the situation required it...so theres no change there... arguing against criticism is not necessarily defending poyet hes big enough to do that himself it just means a person doesnt always agree with the arguments raised..but then i'm pretty sure you know that

Well said that man! I'd be more than happy to be challenging for playoffs again this season, which I'm sure will get me told off for showing a lack of ambition and that I'm supporting Albion 'wrong' for expressing such a drastic opinion (it's happened before...) but some of the squads in the division far outweigh ours in terms of strength in depth. Injury-free I'd be happy to watch us take on anyone, but even a mild crisis has the potential to screw us right up.

All of which I'm sure TB is aware of, he doesn't strike me as a man to have anything other than a grounded opinion of the club.

Agreed, although I think we'll fall just short of the play offs again, the league looks much stronger.

(Am I allowed to quote myself?)

I just checked this, and have found out that this wasn't Mark Twain's own saying, but he was quoting a saying that he attributed to Disraeli.
Apologies for my very own lie, and apologies for stealing Disraeli's thunder!

I'm glad you said that, I was convinced it was Disraeli but thought I was going soft in the head.

Mr Burns' 1 in 10 comment, for example, overlaps (could do a venn diagram here!) a run of games in which we lost only 2 games in 20, and one of those was the cup defeat at Bindipper central.

I think Gus' achiles heal is his inability to find a striker who fits on with our style. CMS started off well but faded badly, Barnes got moved and is very good at what he does but is no longer played as an out and out striker. Hoskins is never fit ( not blaming him btw), Paynter and Vokes both looked clumsy and pretty ineffective imo. Gis has got it right everywhere else, let's hope this long wait is because he wants to be certain he gets the right striker this time.

All totally off topic for the thread and I'd say there is very little chance of Gus being sacked if we don't go up this season.

Gus got the best out of Murray though and did a decent job with Wood. I reckon there's quite a few strikers out there that Gus fancies but wages and valuation are stumbling blocks.

Was I the only one who saw Greer passing long diagonals to Buckley a few times during the season which enabled him to beat the opposition, only to find that no one in the team was near the area to cross to? I remember thinking that was one of Greer's great skills, accurate long passing especially diagonally.
