You don't get it do you?

Yes, he wants the final say in who joins Sunderland and rightly so. His big problem is that he just doesn't know when to shut his gob or rather when it's best to not open it in public in the first place. These types of discussions/disclosures should be done in private-not out in the media. If there is no way forward then maybe it's time for it to become public, not 5 weeks into his stint as manager.

Still, let's suck up to Poyet again shall we? :ffsparr:

Exactly my point. He's getting virtual blanket support on our messageboard but unsurprisingly most Sunderland supporters have little knowledge of Poyet's tenure at B&HA, other than the misinformation over the faeces against Palace. I followed your progress throughout his three and a half years with you and am aware of the cons as well as the pros.
Poyet is absolutely right to be making a stand about his position vis-a-vis De Fanti but not in public, certainly not this soon in public. Ironically, Paolo was castigated for his public criticism of players, yet kept his disagreements with the club's hierarchy completely under wraps until he was no longer at the club.

Good for Gus. What is the issue ? He is the manager and wants to be responsible for all the signings. After all if it all turns to sh*t he will be solely to blame so if anything it is adventurous and brave. Still lets have a pop at Gus again shall we :ffsparr:

Indeed. Gus does nothing wrong again. Scoop!

Isn't it a bit premature to judge the nature of the conversation or the interview without having been present. He may have semi-jokingly said "If you sign him, I'm off", which could then have got blown out of all proportion by the journalist. That might sound a slightly naïve interpretation, but if a journalist wants a story????

Gus is quoted as saying ‘I’m sure the transfers are going to be done in the right way; in the common sense way,’

The story has appeared in three different papers which would suggest it is not simply a case of 'if a journalist wants a story'.

Who knows whats happening, personally not sure if I care either but ......

Di Canio being passive and discreet when in negotiations didnt save his job, only winning football matches will allow Poyet to survive, he knows that.

You as fans will only forgive your managers if they win, the rest is failure there isnt a middle ground anymore, so for me all managers should rightly fight their cause.

Here, David Burke has said Oscar has the final say on signings. It's not a massive leap to presume Gus had that right too. Why should a manager be forced to work with players he doesn't want? Oscar doesn't have to suffer that indignity.

His gripe here was the budget, thereby restricting who he could get. It was never about signing players he didn't want. A manager must be able to do things his way to the best of the resources available - else what's the point in him being in that role?

Having said that - did Gus need to go public?

All good points well made there, Al. Mind you, I hope OG is happy with the budget at his disposal - as I was recently told by an unnameable Albion sauce that he (Oscar) wanted to bring in a couple of players soon after he took over: only to be told we didn't have the necessary funds. Fair play to him carrying on with his job in a dignified manner, but it does make me wonder how long it will be before he gets thoroughly browned-off with the sitch. Perhaps the completion of the new training facilities will satiate his ambitions by developing players - rather than paying big money for proven quality? Let's hope so, eh??

Fair enough, but it could still be an exaggeration of the truth..... and I said "could be", not "is".

I don't see what the fuss is. I'm sure plenty of managers demand the final say over signings, and why not, as they will be sacked if the signings are naff and they lose half a dozen games.

Your absolutely right, i'm sure. I heard about this on national radio this morning, but I havn;t heard the complaints of loads of other managers on the subject. Gus Poyet, playing political games already, Di Canio had a similar start to this in terms of results so we should give it a little time. Poyet is about me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me.

What the funds are and how they're spent are two separate issues.

Whatever, it would seem that the situation is the opposite at Brighton to Sunderland. (i.e. Brighton - manager has final say, relatively limited funds; SAFC - someone else has final say, decent-sized war chest).

Its taking a lot of time for managers to wake up to financial reality, whilst some on here have said that the manager ultimately carries the can for the performance of the team, its actually those who run the club financially. Portsmouth, Leeds, Blackburn who s carrying the can now, that'll be the current directors and the fans. You don't see many unhappy managers being sacked, they have their golden handshake, its what is left behind. Football administration is slowly coming into the 21st century and realising its responsibilities, managers cannot just have what they want all the time, just like the rest of us. Poyet took the job on at Sunderland with his eyes open and his behaviour already is showing his lack of judgement and dignity.

Yep, wouldn't disagree with any of that, BM. I bet your observations don't stop a good few managers continuing to the aged trend in football of threatening to walk if they can't accept the wishes of owners & their administrators: particularly when they feel that their hand is relatively strengthened...

I heard a discussion this morning about Chris Powell having his say how things are at Charlton-the presenter(s) said something along the lines of "Powell is acting with a lot more class than Gus Poyet at Sunderland". It would seem that Gus isn't revered by all in the media.

My loyalties are with BHAFC, not with a former manager, so if he ends up self-destructing or succeeding at Sunderland I'm not bothered either way. Not entirely true, I'd enjoy watching him mess up at Sunderland but can't see it happening.

I can't believe that people are buying his spin AGAIN. It's got "I was sacked live on tv" written all over it. Let's see if the other side of the coin is made public.

Not publicly though?

Perhaps not publicly, but we do not know what has been promised and what is being delivered.

Poyet is a sophisticated manager, maybe he lacks that English reserve we all feel comfortable with, but it might be his way of upping the ante, to force his point.

We cannot be sure whats gone on, but whatever his way of doing things, he will only be deemed successful by winning football matches and if he thinks this might offer a better opportunity to do that then maybe its a shrewd move.
