Gus Poyet has revealed he has already had rows with the Sunderland hierarchy over who the club should sign in the January transfer window.

Black Cats boss Poyet has spent the international break locked in meetings with Roberto De Fanti, the club’s director of football, in a bid to identify potential targets.

However, he admits there were several disagreements during the chats – and that he threatened to walk out if one of De Fanti’s suggestions were signed.

‘I’ve told him my opinions about everybody and I’ve told him what I think we should be looking for,’ said Poyet.

‘We talked about a position the other day and considered four players.

‘I picked two. It was simple.

‘One of the other two was a definite no. If that one is coming, I won’t be here.’

Poyet went on to say he will have the final say on transfers, insisting he will not accept the club signing players on his behalf.

The Uruguayan is planning further meetings in the coming days to make that clear.

‘I’m sure the transfers are going to be done in the right way; in the common sense way,’ he continued.

‘Everyone has a responsibility and then the player has to be the right one for me.

‘If not, I’m not going to accept it.’

Good for Gus. What is the issue ? He is the manager and wants to be responsible for all the signings. After all if it all turns to sh*t he will be solely to blame so if anything it is adventurous and brave. Still lets have a pop at Gus again shall we :ffsparr:

Regardless of Gus and his assorted shenanigans...
I struggle to understand the logic of the reason for having a Director of Football who makes the signings that the manager then has to fit into his team. Unless the manager and the Director of Football have exactly the same perspective on all things football, it can't really work, can it?
Interested if anyone has any examples to prove me wrong...

The issue is that Poyet took the job on the clear understanding that he didn't have final say in transfers. So, having accepted that, it doesn't look good that he's threatening to throw his toys out of the pram

Whilst I do sympathise with what he is saying, he must have agreed to it before he signed surely, but he still hasn't learned anything regarding keeping things from the press. Maybe he was so desperate for the job that he didn't absorb all the ramifications. He allegedly had one man sacked at the Albion in a power struggle and lost out in the next one with with PB. He's doesn't seem to be a quick learner on this issue.

This is what makes me so uneasy with Gus. Everything has to be aired in public all the time. He just can't go quietly about his job, sorting things out behind the scenes.
Sunderland better brace themselves for lots of media exposure in the forthcoming weeks.
