He was on the Stephen Nolan show for about 15 minutes talking about the Uruguay sending off and defending Suarez.

Nolan starting having a pop at him for it, saying he was supporting a CHEAT, and Gus went DISCO MENTAL at Nolan, kept talking about the '66 Cup Final and it was hilario.

Then loads of white man van types starting phoning in claiming they had lost respect for the GREATEST Uruguayan manager the Albion have ever had.

You can check it out on the iPlayer, I think it is on just after 90 minutes into the show.

Marvelous scenes.

Probably best for Gus to have kept his mouth shut last night. This could be a big own goal for him.

I heard it live last night and at times found it somewhat cringeworthy, but did feel that Nolan took advantage of someone who came across as not having full command of the English language and that was unfortunate. In retrospect Gus probably would have done better to say nothing, but it was late on a Friday evening, he had probably been enjoying the experience of seeing his country go through to the Semi-Finals and may have been caught off guard.

If you look at the event itself, the man on the line made a reflex save and in doing so saved a certain goal, this is cheating. But taken into context, he didn't hurt anyone and what he did saved his team, this is surely far less harmful than raking your studs down an opponents achilles or launching yourself two footed into his shins...which we have seen during the World Cup.

I thought the ball was going straght towards his head and he could of headed it off the line? I guess it is unsportsman like conduct however if Ghana had scored there wouldnt be a problem, they didnt.

Is it as bad as diving or trying to take someone out of the game? nah.

Is it any more cheating than Michael Owen taking a dive in the World Cup against Argentina in 2002?

Gus can't understand his accent, bit of a stitch up that is.

First bit of the conversation :shootself:

Nolan: "Hello to you Gus"
Poyet: "Yeah very good, I'm feeling absolutely fantastic right now"

Gus OWNED him in that. I'd agree with everything he said except for the England thing, which is slightly different but I could see the point he was trying to make.

The radio station then puts a few african callers on who slag Gus off, what a surprise :lolol:

You mean head it off the line like Kingson did!

Completely agree with Gus.

Made lots of good points for instance...
-Tackle from behind... is that cheating?
-Ghana still had the perfect chance to win the game from 12 yards - and didn't.

The 2nd caller saying "I now understand why Gus hasn't made it very far as a manager" was the last straw and I was too annoyed with these idiots to listen any further

The agitprop agenda-driven BBC's favourite dark people went out of the competition - they now have no-one to patronise and insult with their "plucky but clueless tribal people" schtick, the same for ITV. Do they then get to deploy their impotent rage on a (spurious) representative of the evil white empire? You betcha, step forward Senor Gustavo Poyet, 'stooge' then straw man.

I supported Ghana from the start, when I decided to put a flutter on them after their African Cup of Nations performances, and solely on the fact they play some nice f***ing football, not because it's "Africa's tournament" and it's suits my chattering class sensibilites to have a gang of fuzzy wuzzies taking it to the Man.

The problem is the timing of the event, last minute of extra time - would people still have the same conversation if it had happened at say 92 mins, you could argue that Uraguay would be down to 10 men. But I think Gus is correct what is the difference between this and tripping a player in the box ? - same result, same punishment.

And do we care if nobody like Gus - we love him

Danny Baker has just pointed out that everyone has gone totally quiet that the free kick awarded to Ghana that led to the handball was in fact a dive.

The problem is the rules of the game. Surely if a 'definite goal' was unfairly stopped, a goal should be awarded. Simple as. No need for a penalty to be taken.

Isn't there a penalty try in rugby (union)? I also have a vague recollection that in American Football, a penalty touchdown can be awarded too.

Just listening and Nolan comes across as a bit of an idiot. Fair play to Suarez as far as I am concerned. He did it for the team and Poyet is right. Lets be honest, if that was an England player in a World Cup Quarter Final, all the people complaining about it would be saying what a great thing he did.

Absolutely. I have been saying for a while that we need a penalty goal and this is a classic example of why. Also, it would mean you could get rid of the automatic red card for handball on the line.

The only problem with this is that you could handle the ball on the line and the worst that can happen is a goal given.

If a Brighton player did that in the play-off final and we went on to win the game as a consequence I would be fine.

If it was England in the final of the World Cup (stretch the imagination there) and the same happens, its great and I would deal with it.

He committed the equivalent of a professional foul and, although I have a fondness for Uruguay, I genuinely see nothing wrong it.

Poyet went a little mad but its that PASSION that made him a great player and will most likely make him a great manager.

I think that a penalty goal could work.

I also think they should adjust the last man red card rule if they give away a penalty. Instead of a straght red the attacking team should take the penalty and if they score the player only gets a yellow but if they miss and miss the rebound the player gets a red.

Too many games are ruined when a keeper is sent off for a slight misjudgement the attacking team score and teams chasing a game with 10 men.

few issues with this

Say for example keeper brings a player down, gets a yellow card than makes a world class save from the penalty, does he get the plaudits and adulation of the players and fans, nope, he gets sent off.

With the penalty goal, what happens if someone deliberatly handles a goal bound shot but the is another player behind them. Also it is definatly open to abuse for betting scams, futhermore i believe that a penalty a red card is fair punishment, a penalty goal but no red card is too soft and a penalty goal and red card is too harsh. After over ahundred years i reckon our sport is ok and should be left the f**k alone.
