What social changes do you have an issue with?
That Hugo, is a massive discussion. but if you are up on the criticisms of the likes of Rowan Atkinson and Ricky Gervais regarding the attack on free speech, and the demonising of people who don't fit world view of the so called progressives, then you have a rough idea of where I am at. I recently went to a discussion with Tim Minchin, after a fairly intellectual hammering of the progressives (a group that he includes himself in), he dumbed it down very succinctly to "so in other words we so called progressives have turned into a bunch of ****s"

I don't know how long you have lived in Ballarat, but I am certain you don't have problems with progressives there :lolol:

Wallace isn’t being demonised because he doesn’t fit into the world view of progressives. he’s being taken to task for a being creepy old man who still thinks he’s still dealing with fruit and veg at the old covant Garden. The world moves on, by and large behaviours change for the better.

As for Tim Minchin, the fact that he’s happy to be in with Progressive bunch of ****s tells you much.

I think this is a good discussion but it really has no relevance to this thread or any place on it.

I like Tim Minchin and think he is an insightful and intelligent fella but one of the social changes that frustrate me is that people present arguments from homogonous groups (in this case 'progressives' (and progressives that aren't progressive at that)) based on other peoples interpretations. I find that most often these arguments are somewhat misrepresented.

A bit like the 'you can't say Merry Christmas' guff we are seeing as the calendar clicks over to December. Add to this, the idea that Ricky Gervais is struggling with being 'cancelled' by the progressives while he continues to have massive hit stand-up show after massive hit stand-up show (not to mention Afterlife).

Anyway like I say probably a discussion for another thread.

It shouldn't, what I am getting at is the shock horror of it all and the mass media coverage as if they had uncovered another Saville.
The media sensationalise news, that's nothing new. Are people here in total shock of Gregg's behaviour? I don't think so. But his behaviour is wrong and needs calling out.

To add insult to injury, poor old Greg’s food critic credentials took a severe knock on Master Chef last night. Whenever he critiques the food first he is totally exposed, as more often than not Marcus Wareing totally disagrees with him.

Cancellation – in that sense – is a load of old bollocks. If you've ACTUALLY done something majorly bad, you don't work again because you deserve to not work again (Edwards, maybe Schofield, for example). Other people who either claim to be cancelled or are the victim of being 'cancelled' normally have enough of a fanbase to prevent them being cancelled (Brand, Tate and many others). Wallace will be fine and he will probably come back doing something or other down the line at some point (like numerous others – Richard Bacon, etc, etc)

And yes, they typically have a whole load of coverage on social media, sometimes legacy media and – in some cases – primetime TV! But yeah mate – poor you for (in most cases) being a bit of a dick. My heart bleeds for you.

Look at the incoming president of the USA. He's done enough to be 'cancelled' and he's about to get arguably the biggest gig in the world!

I'm afraid it is. In a local IT company I worked for not very long ago I had a director give two of my team a humiliating dressing down in front of the whole office. When I pulled the director aside and told them it was unacceptable I was told "They deserved it". I was sacked a few weeks later.
Good for you for sticking up for them. Sadly, this isn't always an option.

Quite. Gervais' Netflix specials are written to offend and upset people, rather than feeling censored he is activity courting controversy and the shrieking twitter twats. And it's really not doing him any harm.

Stand up comedy is in fine health from what I can see. Not sure there has been many times where it has been bigger.

Yeah, that's as good as my critical thinking gets. I can't compete with all you critical thinkers down there in Ballarat.

You asked where I suggest that you are being pushed. It was where you used the word 'push'. Here it is again:

You are complaining about being pushed to change the old behaviours, and it has gone too far. You are complaining about intolerance, and what you perceive as vilification.

But societal change doesn't push. It pulls. It has moved on from where you stand and is now forlornly trying to pull you along with it.

But you're stubbornly resisting. In doing so, you're going off on any number of tangents. Anything to change the subject. Captain Cook, Rowan Atkinson, Ricky Gervais, Tim Minchin and (<insert name of next random famous person here>) just don't cut it. All of them are irrelevant. So is talk about 'progressives' and 'worldviews'.

Back to the subject of the thread, and you will have seen that new claims of groping and touching have been made against Gregg Wallace...

So you have taken my post completely out of context, I agree with the changes to workplace behaviour, in the 70's and 80's they were disgraceful, and I don't have any issue with him being reprimanded in this case. the point I was making was from another post saying that we need to embrace the social changes that are going on today, and this I cannot agree with. Do you have any examples (of the way that social change has generated unreasonable intolerance)?

I can't think of any.

Really an over-complication and getting so far away from the point. This is simply about an (alleged) lecherous old creep who, thinking he was in an untouchable position of power relative to those he was targeting, thinking he could carry on his creepy behaviour (which we all know was prevalent and more tolerated up to the 70s and 80s) without any comeback when the reality is he’d likely have been called out and fired in a whole range of other environments way before now.
