I'm off to Cornwall on Monday for a week of windsurfing. Should be fun. If one person cracks a joke out about seeing a fin, I'll be out of that water quicker than superman.

Erm..is that a wise vacation choice? your average surf board looks remarkably tasty to a Great White.

Superman wouldnt bother running/flying away from a shark though would he. As the Man of Steel, he would have little to fear from a shark attack other than perhaps a tear in his underpants, or a vaguely fishy smell left on his cape.

I was sad and watched JAWS on TV on Sunday. Classic film - only let down is the very rubber like shark at the end - still as it was made in 1975 probably good for its time.

Going Whale/Seal/Dolphin watching in Baja California (sea of Cortez & San Ignacio Lagoon) in February, hoping to see a Blue Whale - the can grow up to 33 meters (110 feet) so would be pretty spectacular thing to see! Not sure if we will see any sharks!

Do you normally cheer yourself up by watching films about man eating sharks?

The people at the Priory should try that.

Why is the bloke in the photo still running once he is out of the sea?

Cant think of anyone being eaten by a shark on the beach.

As the Guardian pointed out today:

"Make no mistake," the Sun quotes top shark hunter Zyg Gregorek as saying in its terrifying wall-to-wall coverage of the holiday hell unleashed by Jaws in Cornwall. "Of all the killer sharks, Great Whites are probably the nastiest. They can literally tear people limb from limb." What the Sun doesn't quote Zyg as saying is that, like just about every other expert, he's convinced the beast is a harmless basking shark. Strange.

There has been plenty of talk about Great Whites in the Med, especially around Malta. I confess to not swimming too far ot when I'm in the med and having a wary eye whilst I am swimming

It's blatantly a basking shark. :(

Why is there such disagreement , surely there are differences between the Dorsal fin of a Basking Shark and a Great White?

Some of the footage I have seen is taken from quite close to it

There have been confirmed sightings of Great Whites in the med and a couple caught (although not big ones, I think). Sightings, if I remember correctly, have been confirmed as far north as the Bay of Biscay.

In terms of the experts there doesn't seem to be an awful lot of disagreement, everything I've read has said basking shark. It's just regular people who have spottd a fin and thought it was a great white, and then The Sun have spun the story that way (as they do whenever this happens!).

I think if you look at the pictures from The Sun the fin is too rounded to be a great white.
