Interesting though isn't it. Why do you think our home form is so bad? And worse than when it was in empty stadiums? Hmmmm let me think

I think the home team are expected to be on the front foot which creates us the space we need to play our game away from home. This is the reason we generally play well against the top teams as they have a go.

The rest of the teams in the PL tend to come to the Amex and sit with two banks behind the ball and watch us try and fail to break them down (Man City have a similar problem but have world class players to unlock this).

We have not solved how to combat that problem at home yet which I believe is largely why teams now come and setup the same as they know they will leave with something. Potter has got to find a way to solve this as our home form has been poor for most of his time with us (with and without fans present).

As for the general subject of this thread it’s the most ridiculous scrubbing around for reasons to be annoyed at the manager I have seen.

You make good points, I don't have the answers but lack of quality in the final third is ultimately where we are failing. Having Webster out weakens us in defence and attack though

The way we try and play is as good as it's likely to get imo and far better (in my opinion) than sticking everyone behind the ball and hoping for a breakaway

A lot of hot air about some purported hot air.

The root is quite simple: 10 goals from 16 home League games is dire, the worst GS per home game in PL.

But it is actually worse than that: 6 of the 10 are from set pieces. 4 goals scored from open play at home is awful;

But it is actually worse than that: of the 4 goals, one was OG, one resulted from a poor clearance (2nd v Watford), and one was an inspired pass direct from midfield delicately slotted home (1st v Brentford).

So...by my reckoning, the 2nd v Brentford is the ONLY PL goal scored at home resulting from what we reasonably could call a flowing move. Beyond an adjective.

I agree the Webster issue has massively impacted the team as Cucurella and Lamptey have not looked in anyway an attacking force which is where they did their best work when we played the three.

Trossard is another who has the quality to unlock defences and make stuff happen but we never get the ball quickly to him in the areas he can hurt teams.

I am hoping the return of Webster and the system we look most comfortable with will also see us turn the tide of performances

Keep the faith and all that

Seem to be a lot of excuses around here. The pressure was off during covid and a lot of teams found it hard to play with no fans, not us by the way. We have had some decent defensive players and our best midfield player has others things on his mind. Add the fact that we cannot score our manager, a decent coach has come under the spotlight and I don’t think he likes it.
Brighton don’t have the luxury of hangers on, we don’t have the budget.
I think we need players all over the pitch but more importantly players who do not believe they have a divine right to be in the PL.

When is Webster back, one man team ?

From the headline in today’s Argus (can’t see the full article as it’s behind a paywall) it seems he still has a way to go

It's not that it's Webster per se, it's having adequate 3 players to play CB in a 3. Burn would be doing that job had he not gone. Webster brings a lot to the table in terms of coming out with the ball, but this is more about missing a player that allows you to play a preferred formation.

I would say we've had to defend a bit deeper because we are a bit vulnerable. We've tried Duffy-Dunk-Veltman in a 3 and it was chaotic. We've now gone with a 4 with Veltman, but it does mean Cucu and Lamptey have a lot more defensive responsibility.

I can't see how anyone could argue selling Burn and Webster being injured hasn't significantly weakened us both in terms of them being very good individually, and the flexibility of tactics we can play.

Potter has tried everything to try and prove his system works, False nines, one up top, two up top, Lamptey high up the pitch and after all that the last Amex goal scored in open play came from a ball over the top….four months ago.

You can’t count an own goal but still depressing reading do we over complicate the game of football?

Tbh the constant reminders and posts and threads along lines of “if you missed Brentford” etc and don’t count this month or that and then you haven’t seen a goal in open play since 1963 and that over and over and over on here is very depressing reading indeed !

Indeed. Also can't remember when goals from open play started to count more than other goals, and why it is the people who last season said "only results matter" who are now doing the "goals from open play except against Brentford" thing.

open play . . . . so any time other then a penalty ( we don't score those ;-) ) or a direct free kick ( not too many of those either)

so basically all our goals are from open play?

My social media has just brought up someone British sharing Premier League France's coverage of the 'story'

They have put in quote marks, the following:

"Stop screaming 'shoot' it frustrates our players!"

Screaming :lolol:

This really is chinese whispers :lolol:

Goals are the drug that keeps fans going back week after week, take away the hit and it’s not much fun anymore.
