If he thinks it is making things difficult for the players, do you think he wants fans to keep doing it?

Challenging. Playing in the Premier League is also challenging, doesnt mean he wants or expects the team to stop doing it.

Sportsmen generally are sensitive souls though, which is what this is about, especially when in a period of self-doubt or devoid of confidence. A golfer can inexplicably get the yips. One minute standing over putts believing they cannot miss, next minute they can barely move their arms with the hole seeming like the most unlikely destination for their ball.

So our players are undoubtedly riddled with self doubt at present in front of goal. We can all see it. We can discuss ad-infinitum the reasons for it, but nevertheless it's there. So while 'shoot' doesn't even register most of the time, in a time of goal scoring crisis, when your instincts are shot, you're passing when you should shoot, shooting when you should pass - hearing cries of 'shoot' probably in that moment makes it more difficult - because it has already become that way. I think this is all Potter was saying.

Like I didn't need Maupay to clap me back as he walked passed Saturday, I take no offense at what Potter has said either. It made sense to me at least, but then I don't have the knives out for him, so I guess I wouldn't jump on it.

Agree with all that apart from the bit about Sportsmen being sensitive souls. I think they have to be a lot less sensitive than the rest of us to get where they are. I get nervous taking the winning penalty in a shoot-out with my 8 year old, I don't think I'd be much good with 30,000 people screaming conflicting instructions to me.

Some folk seem happy to see three home wins a season it’s all relevant I suppose.

I don't think anybody is happy, some people can just understand what's happening and are able to see the bigger picture that the club is in a very healthy state, and that this bad run will come to an end at some point, and that the world isn't ending just yet.

I was really pissed off at the final whistle on Saturday. I had my eldest son with me, his first game was the 0-5 home defeat to Bournemouth in 2019. It's now 3 years later and he still hasn't seen us win. We couldn't even beat ****ing Norwich. But then once the anger wears off a bit you realise that we're in a great position overall, and individual games (or even 6 game losing steaks) aren't something to stay annoyed about for long. We'll go on another good run soon, and Potter will be the messiah again for a while. Then the cycle will restart and the Potter Out brigade will come back. At some point either a bad spell will go on too long and he'll get booted, or a good spell will go on too long, and he'll get poached. Either works.

But whichever way Potter goes, this club is unrecognisable to the one I grew up supporting, and the experience my kids will have of supporting Brighton is going to be on a completely different level to what I had. Which is amazing for them, and why I won't throw my toys out the pram (for long) about the team going through a rough couple of months. Everybody chill.

You think he wants us to keep doing it?

I dont think he wants you to keep doing it and I dont think he wants you to stop.

He's been working in professional football for 30 years, he knows fans are going to make noises and it can sometimes be challenging, opponents are going to try to take the ball and sometimes it can be challenging, refs can make bad decisions and sometimes it can be challenging. It doesnt mean he wants or urges any of that to stop, it is just him telling it like it is. You can get upset by his words like a hyper-sensitive snowflake or you can shrug and accept it.

Spending time and money watching Potter's Brighton play at home - with progressively fewer goals or wins - is challenging.

That's why the crowd has got quiet at games. Some get angry and sometimes even boo. It's just fans telling like it is.

No.

I'm not sure what that clears up. The article/thread title still is a completely made up quote/comment.

Is there really such a massive difference between "graham potter doesn't want fans to chant shoot" and "graham potter tells fans not to shout shoot" that it completely invalidates the article?

Again, thankfully for you, he doesn't say ANY of those either.

PLEASE read the article. Honestly, give it a go.

BS. You know the only reason he brought it up is because he would prefer fans not to shout it.

He only says those things in your imagination.

This is so bizarre to me. Here's our exchange:

If he thinks it is making things difficult for the players, do you think he wants fans to keep doing it?

So here we have you taking what he has said and interpretting it to mean he would like it if we did not do it.

How do you know that if he didn't say it? You, like the headline of the article, like me, are inferring from what he did say. A very reasonable inference (though admittedly the original headline ws much more clickbaity in it's presentation of that inference).

I find it strange that for a team that's managed by a masters in leadership and emotional intelligence that they seem to have drifted into lacking leadership and be emotional fragile.

If the "science" has been used on them it seems to have had the opposite effect.

I'm not sure it's at all strange. Confidence and belief in sports people isn't just restored with a magic wand or a certificate. It may well be that their confidence and belief has been elevated above their ability for some time, and we've had a bit of a crash from a peak position. This happened to Hussenhuttl at Southampton, they had a run of 7 defeats in 8 without winning including a 0-9 home defeat. They've had a couple of similar poor runs. It happens.

Taking the pen and hanging on to a 1-0 could have snapped them out of it. As it is we go into Saturday still wondering if they can get their mojo back. Tough game too.

True, I guess I meant their confidence / belief can be sensitive rather than being sensitive souls.

What on earth are you on about :lolol:

I read his words. The actual quotes.

I then pointed out that the ACTUAL words he said are not the words being used in the thread title or the article title to create a story.

At NO point does he PLEA

At NO point does he EVEN ask people to stop shouting shoot.

YET people on here are kicking off that they are being begged to not shout it........WHEN THEY HAVENT.

Sure, he may well think it's unhelpful(WHICH HE DIDN'T SAY), but he probably thinks groaning at a missed pass isn't helpful. It doesn't mean he has PLEADED with people to stop.

I find it truly terrifying how people love to make up a story to suit their agenda, weirdly often to actively take offence at it.

"HOW DARE HE SAY THAT!!!"

He didn't.

"WELL....SURE HE MIGHT NOT HAVE SAID IT.....BUT HE PROBABLY THINKS IT!"

Sigh.

Anyone found the part of the article where GP "tells" people to "stop shouting shoot" as the thread title states?

The headline of the article originally said EXACTLY that. So the fault lies with the newspaper, not the thread starter. The headline of the article has now been changed from what it originally said. Presumably somebody at the club had a word

Shame the thread starter didn't read the article first and realise the article title he was copying and pasting onto his thread title was completely inaccurate based on the content he was sharing.

At least the article has been amended now.....because the title was not accurate with the content.

In my view, sharing clickbait headlines (without actually checking the content you are sharing) is as lazy as the original clickbait title itself.

I played football last night. First thing someone said to me when we chatted about Brighton? "Did you see Potter told the fans to stop shouting shoot". It turned out he hadn't even clicked on the article, just saw the article headline shared.

However, if the inaccurate headline suits the agenda/story you are trying to set then why bother consider changing it.

This thread is incredible. How is it still going?

The cult of Potter members still clinging on and finding fault with everyone from the paper to the supporters to back their man.

It is simple. Are we bad at scoring? Yes. Were comments by Potter about the crowd being unhelpful blown out of proportion by the headling writer? A bit, yes. Should he have said anything negative about a crowd who have put up with his dismal home form for nearly 3 years? No. Will this whole issue go away when we actually remember how to find the net again? Yes.

Give it a break.

Interesting though isn't it. Why do you think our home form is so bad? And worse than when it was in empty stadiums? Hmmmm let me think
