I literally cannot believe I'm even reading this thread, his passing wasn't the best last night granted but the reason for this is there was no bridcutt to pass to, bridcutt normally received the ball from Greer and with all due respect to hammond he is not near bridcutts class, I absolutely cannot believe threads like this, what about the 2 raking passes against leeds that created a chance for Barnes which he mis-controlled and the ball to Buckley in behind the full back? Calls for him to be dropped are an utter joke and just shows how clueless some of our fans are, look at the defensive record ffs, but anyway I can rest in the knowledge that Gus isn't as stupid as some of our fans!
.

join the stupid fan club then, cause i never said he should be dropped,i asked if he was, would we regret getting rid of 2 capable centre backs.>

But did we need 5 out and out centre backs, with 2 adequate 'emergency' cover players?

what like recently hammond and bridders?,i understand cook is for the future, but i wouldnt be comfortable with lets say indigo cauldron and dunk

I was plumbing greater depths.

AEA, Greer, Dunk, Elphick, Cook, then Calde (he didn't put a foot wrong last season) & Painter.
Hammond and Bricutt are obviously 'in play' alternatives.

That's a lot of players for only 2 places.

That is where you are completely wrong. I believe that he has tremendous potential but being young he does some stupid tackles, like last night, and I think that it would do him good to go out on loan to a lower division team so that he can play regularly and get these mistakes out of his system and then come back to us so that we benefit from his increased experience.

That one mistake has proved expensive to us on occasions by resulting in a goal, which is something that we are not giving away much at the moment

Well we will have to agree to disagree, again your harsh with saying LD dropping down a league to play regular football and gain experience. We boast a great defensive record so far this year, but some of the defending in the championship at other teams week in week out leave a lot to be desired, LD could walk into some of these teams and easily do a good job, if I was his manager and knowing his potential would I dare do this or keep him on the bench? I do agree he would benefit from playing more now to gain experience, but I can remember myself playing football on Sat and Sun ( not this level ) and would hate it when a game was called off and therefore can't imagine he is enjoying not playing? And you say his mistakes can prove costly, we have not faired well recently have we!!! Just because we only concede one goal if we don't score we have still lost as proven in some of the last seven games ( not last night). And even our captain has been slated for pointing the finger to often so someone is making mistakes somewhere in defence?

Would love to see Dunk and El-Abd v Wolves. Greer needs a boot up the arse after his recent performances.

Exactly. Unfortunately people will just say best defensive record in the league etc etc until he actually gives the ball away and it leads directly to a goal.

I wouldn't be against him going to Ipswich or some similar club but from his point of view he might as well sit on our bench as sit on a Championship sides hence the suggestion of lower division side, so that he plays every week.

Our lack of height up front is well documented and now we are winning loads of corners so how come our tall defenders are so inept at winning balls in the air, wether defending or attacking?

Are we talking about the same Gordon Greer who was runner up in last years player of the season and captains the team with the best defensive record in the Championship this season or is it someone else with the same name ?

We could do with 2 fast centre backs who can both defend and pass the ball. If we had them then we may not need such a defensive line in midfield

I completely agree with this. People moan about Gus playing so defensively, but we need to play at least one defensive midfielder as cover. The amount of times Bridcutt saves us against the better teams is quite amazing.

This having the best defence in the league lark is getting tedious and slightly laughable when we've failed to beat or lost against teams like Ipswich and Birmingham who we should be comfortably putting to pasture.

We conceded weak goals against both and worse we constantly concede from mistakes made by the defence or because we fail to close down players.

Having the best defence in the league is great if you're also winning regularly but we're not so please can the apologists stop banging on about it.

Granted, but don't you think it indicates the problems are with the players further up the pitch rather than the defence?

Absolutely. This the key to everything I feel - it would eneable us to play 4 in midfield without relying on Barnes defending, and let us play 2 up front.

Our tall defenders are the shortest in the league (a guess, but there can't be many CBs shorter than El Abd and Greer). What we really need is a big powerful defender to create havoc in the box at corners. Orlandi takes a mean corner, but there's never anyone on the end of them.

You found like a spoilt kid. Did you go to withdean ? Why should we be comfortably putting those teams to pasture . It takes teams millions of pounds and years to get out this league .... Just look at Cardiff.

We are doing well and progressing . Get a grip.

This is an absolute farce of a thread. Absolute farce. Best defence in the league COMFORTABLY, and complaints about Greer AGAIN? What are people seeing? "Misplaced passes", what has that got to do with picking defenders? This is becoming ridiculous, after every match we're getting this sort of tripe spouted about Gordon Greer, in particular. It's complete nonsense.

Best defence in the league, kept a clean sheet last night with ease and people moan about the defence!

This.

Get a grip people FFS. Greer was awesome last season, brilliant at the start of this season and has a hit a very slightly dodgy patch of late (a patch in which we've still barely conceded any goals).

There's so much kneejerk bollocks on here at times.

There's nothing wrong with the Bridcutt role.

The problem is Gus unnecessarily having two others next to him, doing the same thing.

Which is why we were a different team v Leeds after Middlesborough.
