Good things about where I live:

The local newsagent and Mullberry's store are competing in a price war for our business

The pub is so local I can walk there in the depths of midwinter wearing but a t-shirt and shorts and not have time to get cold

My road is too narrow to have any parking restrictions in place, meaning my car has somewhere to sit in peace

The Mumbai Express

Queen's Park and its lovely pond

No shortage of choice for a hearty pub lunch

In Seattle at the mo

The good:
1. Great music scene
2. Great for Watersports
3. Close proximity for skiing/snowboarding in season
4. Microbrews galore
5. Home of Microsoft

The bad:
1. Long way from Withdean
2. Traffic nightmare on the bridges
3. When it rains...it pours!!
4. Tom Hanks did a film here.

Well, I live 2 miles away, and am there most days, and I love it, especially as it has no MacDonalds, and no M&S - just proper shops.

The Rose & Crown fire was a tradgey. It happened on a Boxing Day evening and 13 people lost their lives. It was many years before I joined the Fire Service, but the walls of our station are still covered with pictures, and tributes to those who served before me who attended the incident.

I'm sure if you visited SW again you would see that it has changed very little.

I went to school in Saffron Walden. Loved it.

Seaford,

.. it used to be a major port (hence being a Cinque Port) ...

Seaford is not, and never has been, a Cinque Port. Sussex does have two Cinque Ports: Hastings (an original) and Rye (an add-on).

That's not knocking Seaford though, it's a place I'm fond of - we nearly moved there.

Let's see, Coldean

1) Great views of the Downs and the Great Wood
2) Interesting wildlife in our garden: enough frogs to keep a French restaurant going for a month, slow worms and a family of grass snakes
3) Lovely clean air
4) Very friendly neighbourhood, a place where people actually say 'hello' to each other in the street, after so many years in London I'd forgotten what that was like
4) Plenty of green space nearby for the kids
5) Close to Falmer... if it's ever built

If the Hiker's Rest served Harveys and there was a place to buy fresh food, it would be near perfect.

"As a port, Seaford was dead. Yet in 1544, Henry VIII reaffirmed its status as a Cinque Port. The wily locals exploited their rights to flotsam and jetsam to the full, even to the extent of luring ships into the beach by lighting fires. Scores of vessels fell prey to the wreckers of Seaford shags. Grounded in the bay they were stripped of their cargos." Makes us sound worse than scousers

"In the thirteenth century Seaford had reached such prominence with its exporting and importing that it was appointed a "Cinque Port", giving the town a whole range of civic privileges."

Nope, definitely never a cinque port.

That proves nothing: I could say that I'm the King of England, it doesn't mean that I could go to Buck House and kick out Brenda.

To mention of Seaford there.

You could say you're the King of England apart from it would have no mention of it on various different sites, including histroical maps and museums. :shootself

Of course there's no mention of it on the official site. Seaford is an ex-member, but still holds the rights to call it's self a Cinque Port. The official sight also fails to mention the other 9 ports as well (at it's peak there were 23 ports under the title Cinque Ports). Counting obviusly wasn't their strong point.

Anyone know how Tenterden got to call it's self a port?!?!?

There was a Time Team featuring Tenterden over the weekend, apparently in Henry IIIV's time there was a river there where all of the navy ships where built. It is now long since silted up.
