Superphil, I take it you drink in the Five Bells, is Bill still the landlord?

Bill most certainly is, and a friend too. In fact we're off to his sons wedding in a few weeks. Still running a minumum of 5 real ales, always superbly presented. Just won the regional (Adur District?) CAMRA pub of the year. Does good food too. Don't know how long since you were last there, but he has 5 B&B rooms now, very smart.

So how do you know the delights of Smock Alley Gully?

Firle.

It's an area of OUTSTANDING natural beauty, with an excellent pub, good cricket, superb walks.

And when you get off the downs, it's still an area of outstanding natural beauty and tranquillity - even outside the AONB.

I love living here.
It took me 33 years to get back to Sussex and the house here was affordable.
I have stunning views of the Downs, the river and golf course.
I am 5 mins from the sea, the air is clean
It's quiet.
The bus runs every 10 mins to either Eastbourne or Brighton and it's the same distance either way so I have a great choice of shops.
There is a bird sanctuary conservation area opposite Sainsburys.
Seaford is only 10 mins away (I have to agree about Bengal Palace - delicious)
There are direct trains to London morning and night and to Brighton all day.
There are no parking restrictions in my area.
The neighbours are great and friendly.
The locals supported us well in the council elections.
There are two ferries to two different ports in France.

More Good Things About Firle:

1. It's unspoilt and full of houses that real people live in. Not second-homers who deign to drop by when they've got London friends to impress.

2. Walking down The Street is like stepping back in time. Although not as far back in time as East Hoathly where you have to marry your sister. Even if you are a GIRL.

3. Fireworks.

4. Rabbits and weasels. There's more than enough for every terrier in East Sussex.

I love Saffron Walden and the surrounds! My grandmother went to teacher training college there and when I was a kid we used to go up for weekends every now and again when she had college reunions. We stayed at a great hotel called the Rose & Crown that burnt down some years later and is now a shopping mall! I've got this pic somewhere of me, aged 5, in Saffron Walden.

Saffron Walden is a pain to get to in my lorry, I think it should have it's own junction from the motorway.

Well, I live 2 miles away, and am there most days, and I love it, especially as it has no MacDonalds, and no M&S - just proper shops.

The Rose & Crown fire was a tradgey. It happened on a Boxing Day evening and 13 people lost their lives. It was many years before I joined the Fire Service, but the walls of our station are still covered with pictures, and tributes to those who served before me who attended the incident.

I'm sure if you visited SW again you would see that it has changed very little.

Small Village in Gloucs.

Countryside .. 5 mins walk with the dogs and I'm up on the hills overlooking the Severn Valley in one direction and the southern end of the cotswolds in the other.

Only 40 mins drive from the Hallowed Turf of the Recreation Ground in Bath (and close to some minor rugby towns for away matches!)

Fairly quick and easy access to SW England/S Wales and still only about 2.5 hours from Sussex.

20 min drive to work, the only real hold ups being the odd tractor/horse box!

Still moderately sensible property prices.

Some cracking Country Pubs

Superphil, despite now living in Gloucester I was raised in Storrington and used to go back there regularly until my parents retired and moved away, was a fairly regular in the Bells in the early to mid 90's...before that my first job when I left school in 84 was as a waiter at the Roundabout.
