I have decided to do a good news thread. I am sick and tired, sick and bloody tired of everyday, everyday turning on the TV, listening to the Radio or buying a paper only to see more disaster stories. Today welcomed me with house prices have fallen more than ever before in history at 12.4% down the last year and some suit saying proces will fall by a total of 25% by 2010 and things may be back to normal by 2012. Well Whooppee Fecking Do only 4 years to wait.

Today's good news story is this

Good News Story 1:

Astley shortlisted for MTV award

Rick Astley had a number one hit in 1987 with Never Gonna Give You Up
Eighties pop singer Rick Astley has become the surprise contender for best act ever at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards in Liverpool.

The star, who has never been nominated in the history of the event, is up against U2, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day and Tokio Hotel.

The winner, chosen by fans online, will be unveiled at the show on 6 November.

Astley returned to prominence this year when internet users were "tricked" into watching the video of his biggest hit.

Sole nomination

A craze called "Rickrolling" saw web users unwittingly follow links to Astley's videos. It led to millions of plays of Astley's song Never Gonna Give You Up, which reached number one in the UK in 1987.

It went on to become a number one hit in 15 other countries.

"Rick's fans have obviously decided that he deserves recognition as a pop icon and no doubt they are determined to make sure he wins on the night," said the award show's producer Richard Godfrey.

Madonna is up for the video star category with 4 Minutes - the only nomination she has received this year.

The 50-year-old pop star will battle it out with 30 Seconds to Mars, Santogold, Weezer and Snoop Dogg, who is hosting the ceremony.

Go Go Rick

Calexico's new album Carried to Dust is excellent and I love the mariachi horns. Good Tex- Mex music with a bit of country rock thrown in. Funny how something as simple as a good album can brighten your week (maybe that's just sad though )

UK Mortgage Problems Could Be Bad News for the Pound

Last week, I indicated that the British pound could break 2.0 against the dollar if disaster hits UK mortgage lenders. The currency is now trading below 2.0 against the dollar, but thankfully there has been no disaster.

However, trouble is still brewing for mortgage lenders or banks that have mortgage lending divisions and things are only expected to get worse:

1. First Direct, which is apart of HSBC announced yesterday that it will be withdrawing all of the mortgages to any homeowners who are not existing customers.

2. Halifax, the UK’s biggest mortgage lender is expected to follow suit within days.

Being forced to turn away business because you have too many customers should be perceived as a good thing, but unfortunately in the world of mortgage lending in UK, the only reason why First Direct and Halifax are being flooded with new applications is because other lenders like Nationwide have taken measures to increase the interest rate on loans or withdraw their mortgage lending products completely. If everyone stops providing new mortgages, it could cause the entire UK housing market to freeze up which would be very negative for the British pound.

And how is this good news please Nibble ?.

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Bambi, the beloved doe-eyed forest Prince whose early life was first documented in Bambi, A Life in the Woods by author Felix Salten before being filmed by Disney Studios in 1942, died yesterday.

Bambi was 95.

Bambi died of natural causes at a long-term ruminant care facility in Sequim, Washington, Walt Disney Studios Vice President Sleepy said Tuesday.

"Bambi was part of an amazing generation of Disney heroes, one of the real legends of our time, one of the major participants in the blossoming of movie-making into the complex and beautiful art form we know today," Peter Pan, nephew of Walt Disney and director emeritus of the Walt Disney Co., said in a statement.

Bambi, who met Walt when they were students at Stanford University in the 1930s, was hired for $17 a week at a time when Disney was expanding his studio to produce full-length feature films and hard-hitting documentaries. Both worked on the first of those, 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," which won international awards for its in-depth look at working conditions for dwarves in the diamond mining industry.

Bambi often worked as a colour consultant and was research advisor on "Snow White" and became unit supervisor on "Fantasia" and "Bambi", in which he also starred, and then lead director for "Pinocchio."

He was especially proud of his work in "Bambi" and its classic scenes, including one depicting the heartbreaking death of his mother at the hands of a hunter. That scene has brought tears to the eyes of generations of young and old viewers.

"My mother's death scene, recreated on film, showed movie-goers how convincing cinema could be at presenting strong emotion from real experience without allowing actors to chew on cardboard scenery," he remarked in 1999.

Bambi's consulting credits included "Cinderella," "Alice in Wonderland," "Peter Pan," "Lady and the Tramp," "Sleeping Beauty," "101 Dalmatians," "Mary Poppins," "The Jungle Book," "The Aristocats," "Robin Hood" and "The Rescuers."

"[People] know his work. They know his stories and characters. They've seen him act, been touched by his heart and soul, without realizing it," film historian Leonard Maltin said. "He was one of the pillars, one of the key contributors to the golden age of Disney film."

Bambi's wife of 63 years, Faline, died in 2005. Bambi is survived by fawns Ken and Rick and does-in-law Carolyn and Teya.

The Walt Disney Studios is planning a life celebration for Bambi. Funeral services will be private.

Is it INEPT to build a football ground that actually complies with current legislation?

Or would you have preferred an announcement that the stadium will be built to the original design that was drawn up years ago, regardless of the fact that, come opening day, nobody would be allowed in?

Bizarre News Story Of The Day

Man struck by sausage, but evidence eaten:

FRESNO -- A burglar who broke into a home just east of Fresno rubbed spices over the body of one of two men as they slept in their rooms and then used an 8-inch sausage to whack the other man in the face and head before he ran out of the house, Fresno County sheriff's deputies said Saturday.

Lt. Ian Burrimond, describing the crime as one of the strangest he's ever heard of, said a suspect was found hiding in a nearby field a few minutes later and taken into custody on suspicion of residential robbery.

After the man fled, the victims discovered the home had been ransacked and that some money was taken, Burrimond said.

Burrimond said the money was recovered, but that the piece of sausage used in the attack was discarded by the suspect and eaten by a dog.

"That's right, the dog ate the weapon," Burrimond said. "I tell you, this was one weird case."

Hurricane Katrina Returns To New Orleans To Apologize900 Dead, Untold Billions In Property Damage
September 30, 2008 | Issue 44•40

The Category 4 hurricane had a hard time getting its point across about how remorseful it really was.

NEW ORLEANS—After a three-year absence spent wallowing in guilt for killing several hundred Louisiana residents and leaving the city in shambles, Hurricane Katrina returned to New Orleans Tuesday to beg the Crescent City for forgiveness, destroying everything in its path and killing hundreds.

"I've had a long time to think about what I've done to you all, and I realize now that it was wrong," Hurricane Katrina reportedly told residents. "I knew I shouldn't have been coming in so fast, but I guess I didn't know my own strength. A lot of people have blamed the levees, but if I'm truly honest, I knew they wouldn't hold. It was stupid of me, and for that, I apologize."

"Can you ever forgive me?" continued Hurricane Katrina, wiping out the city's electrical grid with its devastating force.

According to witnesses, the extremely remorseful 120-mile-wide storm was initially sighted off the Louisiana coast nervously rotating in circles and emitting long sighs that reached 115 mph. After several abandoned attempts to head inland, Hurricane Katrina reportedly gained enough strength and confidence to journey to the center of New Orleans to deliver a statement acknowledging its shame.

By this time, however, the catastrophic power of Hurricane Katrina's bumbling apology was too much for the barely repaired levees, which shattered before the storm could even begin enumerating its many regrets. The crestfallen weather system then lurched across the city, inadvertently overturning cars, ripping the roofs off of homes, and violently snapping the neck of every resident it attempted to hug. Upon finally recognizing the destruction it was causing after it demolished a nearby church, Hurricane Katrina attempted to help rebuild the flattened structure, only to have it repeatedly collapse, killing everyone inside.

"Oh, not again. I'm such a klutz," said the hurricane, accidentally razing an entire block of the historic French Quarter as it nervously backed away from the church rubble it had swept into a pile. "Sorry! Sorry, guys."

Sources confirmed that, in addition to making the heartfelt, impassioned apology, Hurricane Katrina expressed hope that it and the people of New Orleans could continue to work on their relationship and possibly one day become friends.

"Please don't run away," said Hurricane Katrina, addressing residents fleeing from a press conference in the now destroyed Superdome. "It's not what you think. I'm not here to hurt you. Oh, jeez. Don't blow away!"

Despite delivering a disastrous "practice apology" to the people of Cuba a day earlier, the hurricane said it felt compelled to speak to the citizens of New Orleans in person, rather than mailing a card or sending good friend Hurricane Rita to do the apologizing.

"I want people to look me right in the eye and know that I'm very sorry for what I've done." Hurricane Katrina said. "And for that. Oops, and that as well."

As a peace offering, Hurricane Katrina reportedly brought an oil tanker to give to the people of New Orleans. But after the screams had subsided and no one came forth to receive the 10,000-ton gift, the storm left the cargo ship in the middle of the highway "in case anyone wants it later."

According to a poll of evacuees, while a minority of those surviving the hurricane's return visit say they believe the storm is truly sorry for what it has done, 60 percent believe the effort was too little too late, another 25 percent believe it will take more than just words to undo the damage, and the remaining 15 percent are missing or in critical condition.

"To be honest, I never thought I'd see Katrina again," resident Tom Andrews said while clinging to a piece of driftwood in the floodwaters. "I sort of wish it had stayed away. At this point, it's only making things worse."

Though the hurricane admitted the apology was not received nearly as well as expected, the cataclysmic weather event remains convinced that its upcoming visit to the poor people by the waterfront will go more smoothly.

"They'll accept me, I just know they will," said Hurricane Katrina, adding that it also wanted to track down all the small children it displaced in 2005 to see how they have grown. "Those people have been put through so much, I'm sure they'll understand."

Hurricane Katrina was last seen wandering off toward the Gulf of Mexico, mumbling something about coming back later to see how the city looks once everyone is done rebuilding

Piss off grandad - Read the stories numpty, they are jokes (well the last two). Just cos you start a thread it doesn't mean you have the right to decide who posts. Again, read 'em, who knows they may encourage you to take yourself less seriously.
