Why not a figurehead manager who would not upset the media and allow him to appoint the coaches he wants. I would suggest Alan Shearer, I know unproven as a manger but the media would love him. for a limited period, and he has a sound knowledge of international football in the way that Germany appointed Beckenbaur.

sticking with Pearce would be a better option, at least he has managerial and coaching experience.

it definitely didn't work with maradona....they limped to qualification and weren't particularly impressive when they got there (they were as embarrassed as we were by Germany...in fact we lost 4-1 and they lost 4-0) despite having the best player in the world and several other world class players

Technically I think you'll find it was 4-2.

4-2!

Can you hear me FIFA, can you bloody hear me?? You b*stards!

In the field
I hope that whoever gets given the job actually gets to MANAGE the team, based on their principles and ideas, rather than having various edicts coming down from the FA. Either trust a manager totally to do the job, or don't appoint him in the first place.

I'm guessing that also rules out Paul Sturrock...

Have Paul Sturrock and Bill Oddie ever been seen in the same room?

It was HE who took Zamora from us!

His silly beliefs are no more fantastical than most "accepted" religions. I don't believe in any of them but we are forced to respect them.

Just far enough away from LDC
hang on - this is Glenn Hoddle who:

1) said that Michael Owen 'wasn't a natural goalscorer'

2) nearly ruined beckham by bullying and bellitling him in training

3) finished Gazza with some dreadful man management ahead of WC98

4) Sold his players down the river by producing a book about them after the tournament despite never telling them he was writing it

Yep a natural for the job clearly!

Rather have him over Harry, but only as long as he keeps Eileen Drewery at home this time!

Seem to remember reading in a few books that some players reckoned Ray Parlour was excluded from the team by Hoddle after saying "short, back and sides please" when eileen did her usual placing her hand on a players head spiritual stuff!!

Sent from London, a small village on Mars, just outside the capital city,Wibble.

Why is that it worked with Beckenbaur at Germany and to a degree with Maradona at Argentina and Cryuff. Whoever is appointed will have about 6 months as the greatest thing since sliced bread then the knives will be put in by the press.

How exactly did it work with Maradona? He was awful. Beckenbaur is a very intelligent man and was a truly great player, same goes for Cruyff. Have you heard Shearer speak? Can you imagine the players running through brick walls for him?

And the notion of replacing a Manager who had won just about everything going with a dull football pundit who once managed Newcastle for a few games before they got relegated is just ridiculous. He would fail miserabley and be crucified in the press.

The best England have EVER played was with Hoddle managing.

FACT

I'm not sure about that, but we were a decent side then and played attractive football. I think he's probably been out of the game too long now though.
