ah, but with his monumental 1995 Coca-Cola Cup win he remains one of the most successful english managers of the last 20 years

in fact what are Brian Little and Ron Atkinson up to?

What a DAMNING inditement that is!

Brian Little always seemed so mild-mannered. I don't think he would up for the cut-and-thrust of international tournament football. Big Ron on the other hand...

Why not a figurehead manager who would not upset the media and allow him to appoint the coaches he wants. I would suggest Alan Shearer, I know unproven as a manger but the media would love him. for a limited period, and he has a sound knowledge of international football in the way that Germany appointed Beckenbaur.

Good God. I think that is possibly the worst suggestion I've ever heard.

Agreed. Also, has anyone ever explained the reasoning behind the ludicrous assertion that England's manager must be English? In the long-term I think it would be good for management teams to only represent their own countries, but whilst this isn't the case, why don't we just take advantage of the (superior) foreign managers that are around?

Why is that it worked with Beckenbaur at Germany and to a degree with Maradona at Argentina and Cryuff. Whoever is appointed will have about 6 months as the greatest thing since sliced bread then the knives will be put in by the press.

England under Hoddle was the last time I enjoyed watching the National Team.

However there is something a bit creepy about him. And his recent apearances as a pundit have highlighted a truly terrible taste in shirts and ties.

Linekar, Shearer, Hansen and Lawrenson - the dream team, then let other "experts" rip them apart on TV!

How has Hoddle done with his academy for failed players?

? Beckenbaur was a very intelligent player, who had pretty much run the German team as captain anyway. Argentina did (by their standards) adequately despite Maradona and Cruyff, although a successful manager and leader on the pitch, didn't manage Holland. There've been plenty of very good players (& England captains) who've made disastrous managers haven't there ???

it definitely didn't work with maradona....they limped to qualification and weren't particularly impressive when they got there (they were as embarrassed as we were by Germany...in fact we lost 4-1 and they lost 4-0) despite having the best player in the world and several other world class players

cruyff has never managed the netherlands....do you mean van basten?

I wouldn't trust Shearer to run a bath let alone the England football team. Couldn't save his beloved Newcastle a few seasons ago from the drop with his tactical genius along side the great footballing brain that is Iain Dowie. Best left on the BBC sofa chatting rubbish with Lawrenson and Hanson.
