On the box Quo looked sounded shockingly good for a 'three chord band!' Spinal Tap - fantastic film, but the songs don't stand up in the gig sense, although Jarvis Cocker playing on Big Bottom was surely a seminal moment?

That's right, Jarvis played bass - he seemed to enjoy himself, mind you who wouldn't with lyrics like "Big bottom, big bottom. Talk about flesh cakes, my girl's got 'em", eh!

Don't think he's played it live for years, has he?

Probably still pissed off that so many people misunderstand it.

Oh, I'm sure the reason was political, for the reason you say and fair play to sticking to his principles, but I think if you're going to play a festival you have to appeal to the lowest common denominator and bit the bullet.

Glastonbury is now so middle class it literally HURTS.

Might as well be RUDDY V...

Have to agree. But, still a quality festival way above the rest. Sundays are always a tad painfull with the daytrippers but managed to survive that better this year.

Get over it. Anyway it's not true. Total mixture from The North, South, East and West. I had a great week. Free food and did not have to pay for my ticket. Worked hard and saw the Bands/Acts that I wanted to. Going next year if I'm not on tour myself

Although I didn't see Neil Young, I agree entirely. He should've sprinked the hits rather than leaving some till the encore. As for not playing 'Born in the USA', I'm not sure of the reason, but it was a miscalculation and seemed to leave a lot of the crowd underwelmed.

'Born in the USA' was a direct swipe at previous Republican administrations and as a political statement, it doesn't fit now as there is currently a Democrat administration. On the tour up to now, he has opened with 'Badlands', which is more about a struggle for Americans to re-connect to 'The American Dream', a theme common in Springsteen's writings, after years of Republicanism...

A bit like we haven't heard much from Billy Bragg lately, but if the Tories get in, we might just quite soon after...

Totally agree, I had a fantastic time and I've got a wickerd suntan! I actually feel sorry for the people who thought Blur were poor by watching TV. To me, it was one of those life-affirming gigs.

Particularly enjoyed Maccabees, British Sea Power, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, White Lies, The Rakes, The Specials and Little Boots. Saw a secret Futureheads gig in the Circus area which was immense.

When I first saw the line-up, I was a bit underwelmed, but on reflection, there's so much to do, probably too much(!), that it's impossible to get bored.

BIG :thumbsup:from me.

The Quo and Spinal Tap were a good laugh

Quo were brilliant. Certain things work for all sorts of weird reasons at Glastonbury...and Quo were one of them. I was starting to struggle by Sunday but they were fun, uplifting my spirits by not taking themselves too seriously and they had a hat full of recognisable tunes to get the crowd boogying and singing along. Seeing the front-of-stage security with their thunmbs in their belt loops grooving away certainly was a sight.

The very fact that people are saying Status RUDDY Quo etc were so good shows what a JOKE Glastonbury now is.

STATUS QUO for God's sake.

Its just an excuse for idiots like Lauren Laverne and Jo Whiley to act like they are the centre of the musical universe by arse kissing a load of people off their playlist.

On the face of it (ie watching coverage of the main stages only) Glastonbury probably does look very 'middle class'. The last time I went that was still a long way from the truth and there is still loads more to see and do.

It's just too big for me now.

What's your point?

I wasn't saying that Glastonbury seeming middle class is a bad thing necessarily, just that the bbc coverage does lean towards the bigger acts like that. It was all Springsteen, Quo, Madness, Blur and all that. If you scratch the surface a bit there's tons more stuff that isn't so 'middle class' (or middle of the road is correct in this sense maybe) to see. You just have to go and find it.

There's nothing wrong with being middle class anyway.

I just think you're a traitor. Did Roll With It versus Country House mean nothing to you?

Not really but I did think of the two that Country House was the more enjoyable song. If anything I'm more excited about seeing Florence and the Machine and Vampire Weekend than I am Blur this Friday.

Tosh! Just got back from my first glastonbury, I normally go to much smaller festivals but I thought it lived up to the hype. It was a fantastic festival, I had five days of solid fun. It is completely different being there in person than watching it tv. Interesting that so many watching on the box thought the Specials were good, as I thought they were dreadful, Terry Hall seemed as miserable as sin and really didn't look like he wanted to be there, which was completely out of sync with how the event felt. Still I can imagine if you are after quality tunes which the Specials have in truckloads then the tv experience would have been pretty good.

FWIW my highlight was Neil Young, absolutely unbelieveable. Honourable mentions to Florence and The Machine (awesome), Gaslight Anthem, F**ked Up, Emiliana Torrini, Peatbog Faeries, White Lies, Bon Iver and a stack load of other bands too numerous to mention.

And btw, Quo rocked!

Were any of the NSCers on this thread amongst those who shouted "Yeeeeah" when Attila asked if there were any Seagulls in attendance when he did his thing in the Cabaret tent at 2:15 on Saturday?

So you're talking about Glastonbury media coverage, not Glastonbury, the music festival, where an awful lot of people have fun every year.

I would have challenged anyone to stand at the foot of the Arcadia tower at 2am on Saturday morning and tell me the festival was middle-class.
