This thread is a spin off from:

Stiliyan Petrov - and what I'm going to do about it

This gave me the kick up the arse I needed to give blood and I gave my 1st donation last week. I can't believe I did not do it sooner, so simple (embarrased that I haven't). I was talking to a Husband and Wife who were there for their 77th donation.

I am interested in how many on here do and how many are going to.

I did it once about 5 years ago and it completely freaked me out, so much so that I felt like I was going to faint for about 5 hours afterwards and couldn't drive home from work.

I may give it a go in the future because i'm guessing it may have been a one off and more importantly, I am in one of the minority blood groups.

I would but most Brits are banned from giving blood in the States because of Mad Cow disease

Used to do it quite regularly when I was in london. If I had an early finish I'd go to the drop in near oxford circus, drop off a quick pint, and then sink a few pints which would be more effective with less blood for the alcohol to be in. (Obviously this is not recommended)
Keep meaning to take it up again, but it can be a faff to organise. Also I'm Oneg so they keep sending me literature to give me a guilt trip about unborn babies.

Oh and here's a link to find a donor session for all those people that find google difficult. take my blood

I gave blood regularly for a few years, but changed jobs and it became difficult to go to the sessions I'd been attending. The Blood Service turned to harrassment (extreme but it really was) to get me to go again. I was getting phone calls and letters almost daily and whatever I said, they wouldn't stop. In the end I had to tell them to f**k off. Much as I still agree with the principle and never met any nursing staff who were anything but superb, the management of the service and their "customer service" team were a cross between the worst type of cold call seller, a clingy ex-girlfriend and a bloody bailiff!

I would love to, it really did save my life when I had my bike accident (you've seen the pictures you can imagine the blood loss) and having now had one I am unable to donate.

Nor bone marrow apparently. :(

It is scary to think I would be dead now had the service and those who donate not been around.

Gave blood on the very day of my 17th birthday! And have been since. Always feel good when I go. Need to book again though, appointment's around the Worthing area fill up so quick. Had a few times now gone to give blood and they're just so full I can't!

It took me until my 40th Birthday to donate when encouraged to do so by work colleagues (The Blood doning vehichle visits our offices 3 times a year). I hate needles but I'm glad I do it now especially after my mother needed blood last year after falling ill. Never too late.

I donate and personally believe it should be compulsory unless medically you are unable to. Not sure there is anyone other than the JWs who would refuse to receive blood when they need. Also, if everyone donated then you would probably have to do so less than once every year. No great hardship. There are plenty of people that moan about needles and all that crap but when they need the jabs to travel they can put up with it! Have the same view about organ donation.

Good for you. (that might sound a bit sarcastic but it certainly isn't meant to)

Go on sign up tonight, right now or you wont do it.

I promise you this is not some sort of personal crusade.
