I think if a club makes an enquiry about existing clauses, a club is obliged to respond to it. But maybe none of the other interested clubs got that far. Or maybe not willing/able to pay £40m which is certainly a fair bit of money for anyone in the Championship.

I'm reminded of when we were tracking Veltman. We were aware of his release clause (details I'm not sure of), but we managed to get him for 900k.

Anyway, yes Veltman decided to stay for another year - despite interest from West Ham - with Ajax (they had just sold a bunch of talented defenders) against the promise/clause that they would accept €1m from any PL club the next summer.

I agree that Gross was an excellent buy for us. He was an extraordinary player, who could put the ball on a dinner plate for Murray.

But so too was Caicedo, who played his best stuff for us. We missed him terribly last season.
