Possibly also an acceptance that Baleba, while clearly a talent, isn't ready to hold down a first team place yet?
I think Baleba will be the most in demand player in our squad in the next couple of transfer windows. Because of his raw strength he's already on the radar of many of the top clubs.
We may not think he's ready yet to start every game, but we have another £50m+ player developing nicely.

Can it not just be succession planning for a certain attacking player in his 30's with just a year or 2 left?
It’s a fair point which I thought about including but then remembered Ferguson. Rutter is also not a great finisher (which I guess does make him a succession to Welbeck!) so not sure you’d want him leading the line.

Quite possibly. I think there’s still some uncertainty on where Baleba will thrive most.

Is he an athlete or a footballer, I’m currently undecided.

I think there’s a few ways of interpreting this deal.

1) He’s an immediate replacement for someone leaving this window.

2) It’s a return to the fabled succession planning for when someone leaves next Summer.

3) The club have identified enough attributes in his game to make them think he can be developed to play mostly as a box-to-box midfielder, rather than a 10 where we are clearly already stacked.

I’m hoping it’s mostly interpretation 3.

Leaning towards it most likely being interpretation 2 but with a hint of 3.

Fearful that it’s interpretation 1.
If it was 1 I just feel that the outgoing transfer would be all over Twitter by now. If we’re at the point of knowing 100% that Pedro/Mitoma/Ferguson was leaving & so we’ve bought a replacement, why wouldn’t the negotiations for that outgoing transfer be known about. None of our big transfers out have even been done secretly, the Fabrizios of this world are always too keen to spill the beans.

Feels a bit like the club might have put out a 'no top players are for sale' message. There's very, very little in the way of rumours, let alone anything approaching activity. Also think there aren't many clubs that could afford what we'd be asking for our top players at the moment.

I’m sure Rutter will be decent, as our guys normally know what they are doing. However, £40m is decent money even today, I would have thought there would have been some decent options at that price.

I thought manure had been talking to Ferguson’s ppl about a £50m move. They always like a surprise near deadline day.

I'm not saying anything new, but I'm so impressed at how we operate in the transfer market, buying, selling, and not selling if we don't want to.

I shall always remember how we tracked Veltman for 2 years and triggered a release clause in his contract.

I’m pretty sure it’s 3.

I’ve watched a number of Leeds Fan YouTube vids bemoaning and mourning his departure. He seems to be critical to transition play from keeper to striker. It’s the forward playmaker role. I think Hürzeler will play him in a midfield two alongside a more defensive player or alongside another attacking midfielder when Wieffer is in the back 3.

Again, Hürzeler was playing Moran in this role in Japan. I think Rutter would be much, much better at it.

He’s also still a little bit one-footed for my liking in a midfielder but that can also improve.
I thought that too, but of his reported goals on here

It's 7 left and 10 right footed for goals scored.
