Where did the tory vote come from, why did months of numerous opinion polls suggest it was in the low 30s?

The issue as I see it is that this election was won not on policies but on personalities and fear.

There is no explicable reason why people who have traditionally voted Labour can swing as they have in many seats to UKIP and Tory.
I don't buy that. It's not like Cameron and Osborne are likeable is it. If you mean fear that Labour wouldn't have done well with the economy, then that is winning/losing the election on policies.

positives were Hove
You're welcome :) And fair play on your post.

I've made no secret of my political leanings but actually I'm pleased the likes of Douglas Alexander and Ed Balls have been given the boot because they are part of the arrogant few in the Labour Party who were deeply unpopular.

Labour are going through exactly what the Tories did when Hague and IDS were leading them and until they put forward a leader with the charisma it needs and not a puppet of the Trade unions then they won't win power, despite how effective their policies may be.

My guess is that they were too left wing for the majority and lost because of it. They need to move towards the centre left to win power, as they did before.

I wrote my thoughts on this in the middle of the night...

The outspoken intellectual snobbery that comes from some (note: not all) on the left seeks to sneer at those who vote Tory. They try to paint Tory voters as stupid, nasty, selfish and/or meek sheep of billionaire media magnates. Voting Tory is presented as being unfashionable.

Beyond that, those who outwardly display Tory intentions with a board in their garden face the likelihood that it will be removed or damaged and, possibly, receive some vandalism to their property too. At the extreme end of this we saw the Conservative candidate in one of the Bristol constituency receive pretty severe damage to both her car and that of her parents.

Because of this I think that in this election at least we have seen a growing number of Tory voters keeping quiet about their intentions until they were faced with their ballot paper.

As long as the trade union block vote doesn't stifle their move to the right of course, and the risk to the huge funding from said unions.

The arse end of Hangleton
My disappointment at Hove being lost has been tempered somewhat by the welcome demise of the smug git Balls.

There is also the consolation that the Green candidate got absolutely DESTROYED !

The left is portrayed as lazy work shy and on benefits, yet people still say that they will vote for them, plus opinion polls are anonymous you're not labeled as evil if you say you will vote tory in an opinion poll!

Plus I think opinion polls take into account things like you mention.

My guess is that of the swathe of undecided voters on election day, a large number of them default to the Conservatives. The left will tell us this is because of the right wing press, but I'm not entirely convinced personally. I think it's a "better the devil you know" mindset that takes over.

100% this - a large number of Conservative voters do not talk about who they vote for or their religion meaning that polls will often be incorrect
