Gary Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day until an agreement is reached on his social media use - BBC statement.
It follows an impartiality row over comments he made criticising the government's new asylum policy.
In a tweet, the presenter had compared the language used by the government to set out its plan to "that used by Germany in the 30s".

So I claimed in an earlier post that this is a simple problem to solve.

This is of course over-simplistic because to change it you need to change the rhetoric coming from the right wing press however here are my oversimplified thoughts.

1. Be clear with the distinction between economic migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. The difference are distinct and the solutions are different (although the asylum seekers and refugees are interconnected.

2. Recognise, that people claiming asylum are not illegal, change the language and change the rhetoric

3. Open up the routes between refugee camps and the UK. Look at comparable countries around Europe and take a reasonable amount. Currently, this appears to be 0!! the other extreme is 'everyone' so find some middle ground here and stop pandering to the extremes. This will also mean there are fewer asylum seekers because there are reasonable routes.

4. Asylum seekers/boat crossing and people smugglers - This is easy enough. Recognise that the unique aspect of the UK is that it is an island. Stop trying to use this as way to f*** people over and see it as a small complication. People are allowed to enter a country and claim asylum, this is hard and dangerous over the English channel. So move the place where they can claim asylum to somewhere safer, that doesn't need people smugglers to facilitate the journey. France has offered to do this, take up that offer.

5. Last and not least, process the claims far quicker. clear the backlog, get people out of hotels and into work. This makes the cost to the taxpayer less and starts to fill some of those job vacancies caused by brexit. Win f***ing win.

Iam sure there are details to iron out and other aspects to consider but as a start, who wouldn't vote for a system like this?
I appreciate your thoughts.
If only the politicians were putting those forward as policy rather than their continual sniping.
I'm not sure about your point under 3 I don't think many people in this country feel as though we have absorbed 0

Not sure it actually matters in this example. In terms of "production" (in that what you see on air) a huge percentage are employed on a casual basis.

Channel Four is bound by impartiality rules but doesn't make any programmes itself. No-one you see on air is "on the payroll".

I personally think Linekers "defence" is disingenuous in that respect, but a complete red herring. He is clearly bound by the rules, but the rules and their application need looking at.
Think you nailed it in your last paragraph.

Spot on. The current government have numerous obvious failings but anyone invoking the Nazis or fascism are either incredibly thick or have a screw loose ...
Just isn’t true though, they are putting forward the idea that anti slavery laws do not apply to illegal immigrants, that is utterly depraved and completely akin to the rights minorities were afforded in Nazi Germany.

I wonder how similar the labour policy will be

The reason I have posted 0 is that as i understand it all the mechanisms for refugees from camps to get to the UK have been closed. I would be interested in alternate stats.

I want to be clear that point 3 doesn't include asylum seekers because they are different to refugees.

Both of the main parties' current posturing is purely about the battle to retain/win back the former Red Wall seats in the next election.

Back in my youth ,it was all about appealing to "Basildon Man". Now policy is determined to court the Northern Gammon vote.
Basildon man was a twat. but at least there was some kind of aspirational ideals.
I despair of politics in the 21st century.

Withdean area
and bravaman's wild exageration avoids censure, and she is home secretary, not a footballer
Patience, her censure will be at the ballot box.

Lineker’s not being punished or shutdown, he talks freely to the world on all and sundry. He’s in a fixable dispute with one of his two employers (I shouldn’t say employer, the BBC and Lineker have created the veil of him being a freelance businessman to save £m’s each in National Insurance).

I think the last sentence of point 3 is a fallacy. People who arrive in small boats do so because they know they have no chance of getting here via establsihed channels. If we change the rule to allow more people in but these people still won't be on the list, it won't stop them coming by small boats.

As for France offering to let asylum seekers stay in France to claim asylum in the Uk, it's not going to work. When (as they will be) most are eventually rejected, they'll be in France and will be able to apply there. Sooner or later this will become politically untenable for Macron.

I agree point 1 except that it's clearly impossible, because the economic migrants mostly know the rules so won't admit they're economic migrants. People who want to get here and know they won't be allowed, tell lies. There's no practicable way to tell the difference between a lying economic migrant and a truth-telling refugee. That's where the truth of point 3 comes in, and why it's important to pick genuine refugees from genuine refugee camps rather than the small boats crop who are trying to escape from France.

Point 5, I agree unequivocally. My brother agreed to house three Ukrainians and their approval was confirmed, but they had to wait two extra months in Poland because of a single form that took 2 months to get it signed. (Though I'm a bit wary about using immigrants as a way of cheap labour. We've been down that road before and it leads to problems. It may be that, what with language problems and pure poverty to start out with, and possibly a strong work ethic, they will take the lower paid jobs that longer-standing residents won't. But it's not something to aim for. Rather aim for the refugees to qualify as something, doctors, nurses, teachers, accountants, whatever.)

I think of things in degrees.

Hitler, Putin, Pinochet junta, Galtieri junta, Stalin, China (Uyghurs, the genocide of men and industrial scale rape of women that no one talks about), Hutu in Rwanda, Serbs mid-90’s … pure evil. The organised torture and murder of opponents and/or races, ethnic groups.

Erdogun, opponents and human rights campaigners imprisoned en masse forever, homophobia, disappearances.

Trump, KKK and Alt Right buddies, Steve Bannon - ****s, racist, not a care for the planet, thriving on violent division. Orban in Hungary.

On a Richter Scale, Braverman/Johnson to me are a populism tremor, just passing through, their brief day in the sunshine. Albeit with the damage of Brexit.

Lineker and lots of people round here talk always in binary absolutes, with zero interest in what’s going on in our neighbours or the Uyghurs for example. Braverman is either a hero or pure evil, as bad as anything in modern history. To me that’s bullshit. These are just rubbish politicians/administrators who, in this wonderful, democracy, will soon be chip paper.
does "rubbish politicians" mean incompetent or misguided?

Thank you. Everyone might want to listen to that.

SJ is universally loved on NSC, not sure he will be afterwards :lolol:
He makes some very good points.

Much of this may come down to what is in the agreement between Lineker and the BBC This seems to be a grey area at the moment.

If that's a joke, it's in disgustingly poor taste. But if it's serious, and you genuinely think that the treatment of asylum seekers is completely akin to how the Germans treated the Jews and other minorities, then you really need to study a bit of history. Have you even heard of Belsen, Auschwitz, or the Holocaust?

On my goodness - we're abolishing anti-slavery laws now, are we??
Pffft! Yeh right.
In that case, I've got a couple of £1K in my piggy bank, so ...... where do I go to buy a reasonably pretty female one? Answer?*
You're talking through your arse.

* And just for the record, no I wouldn't anyway.

In all those degrees of nasty murderous, leaders/regimes, you will find that the victims of their crimes were first described as a problem group of people, weakening the country, and then often had laws changed to allow them to be treated differently from other people. Linekers tweet described the language used in Bravermans selling of the Bill as similar to the type of language used, not that the Government is enacting the Nazi's Final Solution.

Braverman described the Civil service, lawyers and Labour as a left wing Blob, blocking the Government from doing what it must do in the National interest.
National Socialists did the same thing with the German civil service, lawyers and opposition, and then of course went further, but it started with the language they used, and we should remember where this language can and has lead in the past.
