Don't think there is much of a gang culture here, similar to the situation Edna described for Brighton, just a few groups of disaffected teens...at least that is how I would sum things up. I used to live in Edinburgh, there was definitely one there but it was mainly teenagers...there was one group called the Young Niddrie Crew, you would see their initials (YNC) daubed around the city, the place they came from was bloody rough...they had metal cages on the traffic lights to stop people from smashing them up...even the rats carried flick knives.

Only gangs round these parts are The Fiends Of Preston Park and the Croquet Club Krew. Innit.

Feral little shits have been robbing teenagers in Preston Park. Happened to a friend's son a few months back.

Round my way, we used to have some trouble with a particular house and we get graffiti from the 'pankhurst crew' but thankfully nothing much to write home about.

not forgetting the knobjockeys.

pssst. There's a fair few places in the BN postcodes that could take the Pepsi challenge on property prices with your little 'hood. And win. Easily.

Why then are there dispersal notices scattered around the Preston Park and Varndean areas?

Brighton seems a strange place for trouble and anti-social behaviour. Apart from above, there was also a piece in the Argus this week complaining about the noise and disruption in Hanover. And earlier this year, there were lots of articles about the problems caused by the Southwick Soldiers - andt Southwick is scarcely an example of urban squalor. Yet the estates of east Brighton: Moulsecoomb, Bates, Bevendean, Coldean, Hollingdean etc scarcely witness any trouble. I live, have lived or walk through all of them regularly and they're peaceful to an extreme.

Why is it the posher areas of Brighton that have the problems and the more deprived are relatively quiet? That seems counter-intuitive.

We used to have a gang round here that used to terrorise the locals. They never used to bother me for some reason. didn't even try to damage our car when we used to drive it at them :lolol: They fell apart when one of them drove a stolen motorbike into the back of a bus and died :lolol:

Although I live in Saaarf East London, we don't have much of a gang problem around my part. Could be that where I live is only 5 minutes drive from where Stephen Lawrence was killed ,and the old BNP bookshop was just up the road in Welling! This perception of my area as being a recruitment ground for far right elements has meant that we do not have a large immigrant population around here, as opposed to most other south east areas. Now, rightly or wrongly, it would seem that most gun crime in the capital is black on black,so this has meant that we do not have too many incidents.

Most of our trouble is just from noisly little chavs who want to try and be hard but really just can't hack it. A short drive along the South Circular to Woolwich though and it is a different kettle of fish altogether.

Tell me about it! We've got the Somalians who just seem to have no respect for anything. there's also an asian area where I wouldn't even go during day time. Then the east european gangs. I seen a few fights in the twon centre and kids chasing each other. So far though they just keep it amongst themselves. I am sure it is a matter of time before I get robbed or beaten up though, just for being white.

God bless Ken Livingtson!

What's the "Police Service"?

I think they have one of them in Northern Ireland, but round these parts they're usually just police forces, or constabularies...

Hair splitting aside, Brighton is one of the few cities that doesn't have a gang culture as such. Before you say it, yes there are a few kids who give themselves stupid labels (won't dignify them by naming them) and herd around in large groups at night, drinking WKD and being lairy to bus passengers, but they're not gangs in the London sense, ie groups of drug dealers shooting/stabbing anyone who gets in their way.

Similarly (touch wood), there isn't much of a gun issue here either, compared to, say, Nottingham, Bristol, Manchester, London, Liverpool etc. The murder rate is actually very low against most other cities.

No blacks = no gangs.

They should try what they do in some US States, a curfew after 10PM for anybody under 18 unless they are accompanied by a 'responsible adult'. What happens is that should kids be seen walking around after them the Police have the right to detain them until they can be collected by a parent or guardian. It's very effective but not applied everywhere.
