I am on your side, and see what you are saying about addiction and that folk have to take responsibility. But, given that some folk do get hopelessly addicted (and yes, it is THEIR fault) betting firms could surely have some sort of system, whereby they see OTT sums being invested and deny the chance in some way. Yes, I know this sounds vague, but are they even trying?

Why should they? They are businesses out to make a profit.

Being a bit of a gambler myself I was at a Casino last night a fella lost £50k in half an hour or so on Roulette staff just happy to take his money, other punters showed concern as he was clearly panic betting nothing from the Casino staff.

I enjoy the occasional punt, but even I believe that gambling should be illegal.

It offers absolutely nothing to society. It is an expensive hobby for some, but for others it can destroy lives & families.

As an industry, it contributes very little in the form of tax or employment, relatively speaking. Yet it destroys so many lives and families.

When something is so destructive, it should be banned. People can find better things to do, better things to spend their money on, that benefit both themselves and society considerably more than gambling does.

Gambling is part of human nature, it would impossible to ban it, ridiculous comment I'm afraid as much as banning sex or music!!

I would like it to be much more regulated and gambling advertising banned from sport, and perhaps altogether from the TV.

This was a very interesting programme on the Beeb, Can You Beat The Bookies (our Tony gets a mention):

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p07hjnl6/can-you-beat-the-bookies

I gamble for fun, only on bet365, mostly on their in-play offer and the Grand National offer. Rest is fun £1 or £2 football bets only as I like to watch neutral football which has something at stake for me. I keep a record and so far £1200 up in 3 years.

In answer to another post I have made many stupid bets in the past that I'm happy to share: lost £250 of my bet365 profit on Trump and another £250 on Brexit. Got terrible odds but I thought Trump losing and Remain winning were certainties haha! Stupid mug bets, I learnt a lot from it but can happily carry on having fun so I guess I don't have that addictive gene?

As for Tony Bloom, at times I've resented his earnings made from the misery of others but then what about the joy he now brings with the Albion? And isn't he now taking money OFF the bookies with his business model of huge stakes on good value bets from data analysis?

edit - sorry, Cadiz has already signposted the programme. A good watch.

Why should they? They are businesses out to make a profit.

Which is precisely why it is necessary for government to impose a level of moral responsibility in the same way that they have with the alcohol and tobacco industries.

The levels of advertising and sponsorship has got totally out of control - there’s hardly a sporting event, whether broadcast or live, where there isn’t a substantial level of advertising. Advertising which works, as becomes blatantly obvious when the turnover and profit levels of the big gambling firms is studied.

Yes, Ok -fair enough. Businesses are there to make a profit, and I don't object to that. But bookies watching gleefully as some pathetic punter pours thousands in, is rather different to say, Sainsburys, putting on a penny here and there on the quiet to increase their profits. But, yes, where do you draw the line and at what point are they hopelessly addicted, deservous of help, if at all, due to their own stubborn stupidity.

But is it really luck? Surely ,to your credit, (not meant to be condescending in any way!) at various stages you must have evaluated what you were doing, such as perhaps how many beers you should have, and thought -steady on; I have had enough.

I’m lucky that I have the ability/trait to evaluate, especially before handing over money to a bookie .... I’ve had about 8 small bets in my life. I did more typically crazy stuff like drinking endless pints/shorts on lads holidays or in many, many years spent clubbing, I got smashed like everyone else too many times to mention. But in nights in, even in my 20’s, simply didn’t fancy alcohol. But in clubbing say 3 times a week, I loved booze for the banter and as a means to end.

Just fortunate that I don’t get hooked on booze, gambling, ‘white powders’. Whilst that very same lifestyle was a slippery slope for other people I know and know of. Later alcoholics, or gamblers who lost everything.

Sorry for widening the discussion to addictions in general.

I’m a pro gambler, my biggest problem is getting a bet on with the shysters which is an occupational hazard. No-one cares about that though, and neither should they.

The programme the BBC did last week called something like “Can you beat the bookies” showed how little it takes for shysters to shut you down. Although the pro football punter on there who advised him to bet on some Scottish reserve rubbish to win £90 should be ashamed as it’s a game that any double figure bet will flag up with the shysters.

There are obviously many people that are addicted to gambling and the bookies should be doing more to help them. All the time people are losing they just let them bet as much as they can, not so much when you start winning.

The amount of advertising they do is criminal really with the likes of Ray Winston, Frankie Dettori, Redknapp, Stellimg etc etc on the box all the time promoting various shysters that won’t lay a bean. No wonder people have problems stopping when it’s being bombarded through every bit of media. Being run by accountants, they really don’t give a shit about their (losing) customers despite their protestations that they do.

Meanwhile, those that win have to try to keep one step ahead of the bookies by using multiple beard accounts and running around any shop they can still get a bet on. Botfair continue to take the piss by charging a premium charge to winners on top of the commission.

The government will never ban gambling, they make too much from it.

For some people it does make them bet and bookies prey on them. Just be thankful that you or one of your family arent one of their victims.

A molten thread started by a melt. Thankfully a longstanding member of my Ignored team of sanitary inspectors third class. :lolol:

One bet in the 70s, me. Never again. Why? I'd love it too much. Can't be arsed to read the whole thread but there will be discussion about addictive personality etc.

Bottom line, like drinking, not pulling your weight at work, drugs, unfaithfulness, you do have a choice, except when you don't. When you don't you do have a choice to get help.

No apology necessary -the same arguments are probably valid for all types of addiction. Our great friends over many years teenage lad gradually got into drugs, despite all advice from parents, neighbours, school staff, and even an employer who stuck by him. Result - he ignored it all and did several years in jail for drug-related crime. He was not an instant addict -it took months if not years of practice when all his good friends left him in disgust. He had himself totally to blame, as he has since admitted. I accept that some folk are weak-willed and have things going in their lives, which perhaps account for a resort to drugs, but over time, we can all stop at some stage, and evaluate what we are doing. But some choose not to.

I don’t want betting in the UK banned.

Just restrictions on the cash flows that can be lost. If at all possible. Someone can gamble away all their net earnings, within seconds of the pay hitting their bank account. That’s exactly what happens to so many addicted punters.

You and I fortunately don’t have that propensity. Others of all ages, IQ’s, backgrounds simply can’t help themselves.

I’ve never been tempted by gambling but I’m watching the Panarama program on now and feel disgusted.
I understand that people make choices but the VIP managers who give them money when the punters losses increase is despicable.
I had no idea this went on.

The VIP stuff is criminal. Unsurprisingly, I’ve had no offers of free boxes at Cheltenham, Goodwood, Wembley, Old Trafford etc etc.

Does our chairman not own/run Starlizard? Guessing he gambles a bit.
Think it's down to the individual, but certain groups of people do seem to need protecting for certain companies out there.

Starlizard does not dupe gammon into thinking their dole money can be instantly doubled by use of 'smarts'.
