[Help] Gambling: The Unique Addiction?

No it is true, I have seen the owner of an establishment jump on at the "right" time and win the jackpot within a few spins many, many times. Not guranteed but when you are handing out change and cashing cheques for the money to go straight in the machine you start to spot patterns.

As you can see from the word cheque this was a long while ago so no idea if it is true today on modern machines.

Maybe the technology wasn’t as good as it is now and the machine used to do cycles that is possible I guess.

I haven’t been looking for a new job, I’m lucky to be in a great position at a fantastic company already. I’m very happy where I am. However, I was approached a few weeks ago by an organisation, an entrepreneurial business gearing up to sell, looking to offer me a position.

The package is unreal - well over double my current income, sizeable bonus and a small stake in the business itself. I’ve done some research, and the business and founder are incredibly well respected.

The drawback? It’s a gambling technology company. And that has really thrown me. On the one hand, it has the potential to set us up for life (especially my kids, who will need all the help they can get financially as things stand), yet on the other it’s dirty money, isn’t it?

I feel like if I took it I’d be selling my soul, and if I didn’t I’d be letting my family down.

I’m conflicted. What would you do?

Don't take it, especially if you are comfortable already. Jobs are rarely safe in gambling industries, it's such a murky industry.

I wouldn't judge you unless it is a role or a company who are at the point that actively use the dark arts to woo or encourage problem gamblers to gamble more/advetrtise to encourage children etc. Then I would say you lie with the Devil himself, despite the "oh it helps my family blah blah blah". You'll know the difference.

OK. My view is that the bookmaking side is legitimate (whilst some people find it distasteful), the other isn't and is too open to crookedness. If I was asked to code something that was effectively cheating a punter, I don't think I could do that.

I know as the OP you will find my reply surprising, but take it.

Your kids have to be your 100% priority.

You turning down the job won’t change the original crux of my post.

In a perfect world society could rid itself of all addiction, but it’s not a perfect world and it never will be.

I’d talk to the family, explain your reservations about the job, explain you feel you’d be letting them down. See what they say.

I also don’t necessarily agree family should always come unquestionably first, personal happiness is also vitally important; if you’re an unhappy parent and partner you’re less benefit to the family.

I agree with the others that your family have to be your priority. However I disagree that this means you should take the job. Your family deserve a happy dad and a role model that shows them that money doesn't trump everything.

There is a lot to be said for being able to look yourself in the mirror and enjoy pride in what you do.

Talk to the family and find out what they think before you make a decision.

I took a job I dislike for a horrible evil company and all for the money.

I despise myself for working there. I thought it'd be temporary but years later I'm stuck. Now if I did the same job elsewhere I'd have to take a 40% pay cut.

Money is one thing. Think about your own happiness too. Better for your family that you are happy.

You personally cannot be held responsible for someone’s actions they have a choice at the end of the day. Take the job, if you don't someone else will, the tech is there already, if you feel uncomfortable about others addiction and issues. It is not your fault or cross to bear, I do not blame anyone else but myself, I wish the FOBTs did not exist in bookmakers, but wise enough to not go online.

None taken, just trying to raise awareness that addiction in general can be seen as an illness, problem gambling is just one of the possible symptoms/side effects.
