I agree with your post, except that the private guilt/shame is possibly still there in spades, although as you rightly say the public guilt/shame is not.
Agreed, I may have worded it wrongly.

I have definitely been guilty of very poor eating habits at times, and the guilt/shame is definitely there.

Nobody starts to drink, smoke, gamble or take drugs believing they will become an addict, and even when they become one it takes a lot more to admit it. In the 60s people who smoked Peter Stuyvesant were portrayed as living on a yacht in the Mediterranean, spirit drinkers are party loving or intellects, everyone who gambles are shown in crowds laughing and singing having a great time, drug addicts think they are international rock stars. None of this is true. I have lost a family member to lung cancer, another to suicide from depression due to drinking. I have been to crack cocaine anonymous meetings with a close friend and listened to stories of how people have descended into hell. We now have the likes of Robbie Savage and Jermaine Jenus (haven't they got enough money) laughing as they advertise the fun of gambling, while in the real world people are losing their lives, families and homes. It's time all gambling was banned from advertising. It's not illegal, you know it's there and if you stop pushing it people may become more responsible.

Good start, now let's see it disappear from the current saturation TV coverage and the pitch-side hoardings

Still allowed on shirt, just not main front sponsor. So expect back of shirts sponsor like lower leagues, but bigger lettering. Also still around ground and every advert break. Not forgetting Talk Sport plugging betting every 30 seconds.

Great news (hated seeing practically half of the EPL teams bearing the logos of random asian betting companies front and centre) but far more needs to be done to curb its visibility.

The one time of the year I go a bit mad with betting is on the World Championship snooker, which starts on Saturday.

I don't smoke and hardly ever drink now so I enjoy having a heavy flutter for the next fortnight.

It‘s a sheep in wolf’s clothing. All but one PL front of shirt deals are for overseas gambling companies. Total value of gambling sponsorship in PL £60m, most recent increase in total PL income (non-COVID) in 2022 was £500m.

The market price of shirt sleeve deals will go up whilst front of shirt will decline. There will be negligible impact on overall PL revenues or gambling harm.

The industry will continue to control some gambling charities in terms of what they can say (no mention of suicide, bankruptcy or domestic violence in the literature) and encouragement to say that gambling will be made ‘safer’ for those with problems. There’s no ‘safer’ amounts of booze or crack for alcoholics or drug addicts though.

Gambling industry controlled by white collar Escobars, insidious and malevolent bunch.

Gamblers who are losing £1,000 a day are expected to face checks as part of new, tougher gambling regulations.
Sources say these will kick in when a gambler loses £1,000 in 24 hours, or £2,000 over 90 days. How these will be carried out is as yet unclear.

Looks like the widespread advertising and marketing will continue unabated. A huge victory for the gambling companies’ various lobbyists who must have been pulling their hair out each time they got Tory minister onside, they were then sacked, moved on or they resigned.

A great day for the head honchos and executives of these gambling companies whose salaries would make a footballer blush.

Brighton factually.....
Days like this when Tony Bingos horse rocks up with a 100/1 or 225/1 winner which I would have backed I miss gambling.
If I had not self excluded myself from bookies last July, I would slapped at least £12.75 e/w on that.
(I did stupid bets ending in 75p)

As folks probably know, I had an issue with gambling about 15years ago and sorted it all out, being paid cash in hand while fitting floors was a blessing and a curse at the time. I sorted it all out and cleared my overdraft saved for a house and moved back down here.

I had blocked my card from bookies on line or in the shop (online was never a problem for me, never done it) and it is still blocked to this day.

I started having the odd flutter again about three years ago, I was not going mental but as time went on I started thinking about it more and started doing silly bets and playing those stupid machines as well just because I could afford it, building up to roughly losing £150 a week.

I was going away to a festival in Spain last year and was working out how much I could take and thought damn, I could have taken X instead of Y when I was working a budget out. I had been factoring to my pocket money each week losing £150.00. yeah I might win occasionally and quite big (2.5k once), but meh, I was bored of it.

So I asked the local bookie about self exclusion and he gave me a number, banned from all local bookies and their other linked shops allowed my photo to be used facial recognition. I know these can be beat or ignored etc etc, but that works two ways. I am somewhat vain and care deeply what people think about me, somewhat insecure to be honest, if I went in, I would hate to be approached and told to leave etc, that shame is keeping me out and the new found freedom I have found.

Best thing I have done in a long time.
I do not sneak off to stick a bet on, arrive late home after popping into the bookies etc, if you know, you know. I do not miss the anxiety of knowing this is wrong, I don't look at the results slyly during the day or evening.
This allows for quality time with your family or just with yourself, free of guilt you really do not know how good that feels.
I was never in debt and don't have a credit cards and my card could never be used anyway it was always cash I thought I could afford to lose and I could really to be honest.

9 months on and I have saved 6k in my pocket money account and bought myself fancy shoes, records, meals, days out.
I Know I would never win that in one hit.
Result, but the best bit is peace of mind, knowing I am in control for once

I did ask someone to pop an E/W £13.75 Trixie on for the leagues in August for me, which is looking good Leeds, Birmingham and not so good Doncaster, I just have to trust the person to collect for it me :ROFLMAO:

The self exclusion lasts for 18months and they contact on 12months to notify you that you have 6months left how ya doing and all that jazz, I will be saying roll that puppy over.

The main point is, if you are a gambler and have a problem, try different things, the urge will probably always be there, I will probably gamble again, maybe even the grand national and defiantly the leagues again at the start of the season so I have an interest all season and not a single or double games. It is about finding out what works for you, ban yourself, block your cards, decrease the amount you can withdraw from a cash point daily. Your mental health will improve remarkably when you are not gambling easy to say not so easy to do I know. I feel your pain, I know your anguish and self loathing. The advertising is everywhere radio, tv, social media you cannot hide. I know many folks have no sympathy and think it will be your own fault, and yes it is but there is always a reason why we an issue, be it mental health, a thing that just grew, etc etc, at the end of the day they do not know what it is like, only another gambler with an issue or family, friends know what you are going through.

Good luck if you have a problem reach out, speak to someone, stay strong.

This has been quite therapeutic typing this, thank you and sorry if it is self indulgent, it is your own fault claptrap.

PS: oddly it was never about winning loads of money for me, at first bored, then habit add to that I hate losing.

Fair play to you, when I was half way through reading this I thought it felt like you had a lot to say out loud and it’s good to do that. Well done for sorting it out yourself 👍

A good read, thanks for that. I had a wayward few weeks a couple of years back. Imo whatever someone says about their gambling being Under Control I strongly believe that anyone at any time could have a major wobble and bet way out of their limit and control. It'll always happen at some stage unless you're a cyborg. It's how the bookies rake it in. Thankfully I've learnt what I can do and thankfully too the bookies rarely offer me promos now and been gubbed by many. It's the promos that get me (bet £5 get free £5 etc etc). Cheltenham of course is full of it (PaddyPower especially, who are or course part owned/controlled by the IRA).
Now I know my limits (max bet £10 and monthly limit) I enjoy at lot more and still turn a nice profit.

The industry needs stronger regulation.

I blame Blair/Brown for loosening the regs much too much once the internet became involved.
