Whilst I am pretty much anti any conspiracy theory going, especially related to Coronavirus, I am deeply sceptical that there are anything like the amount of people flouting the rules as we are being made to believe. There seems to be the same 3/4 pictures going around, and only a handful of places being mentioned.

Walked by a house yday with chairs, table, beers and wine bottles in front garden, plus two residents and a couple of neighbours sitting round the table.

What a message to send to the kids out for their daily walk with their parents. Selfish bas*****

What is the guidance on using your front garden? Obviously they shouldn't have neighbours around.

I guess it’s ok if used by the occupants but there’s a line and we all know what’s right and what’s wrong without having to have rules

Don't be a silly bugger???

Was painting my fence yesterday with allsorts walking by but I was inside my boundary and they were sensible enough to keep a distance, we just nodded and said good day to one another.

The benefit of keeping social interaction with others is at least as healthy mentally as this isolation business is physically.

I’d prefer to drive to somewhere quiet and let my kids have a ride around than ride on the street or in a busier public area. Too many people immediately jumping to conclusions.
You might prefer it, but driving to exercise is not allowed. They don't want everyone driving to the same places.

As always, the idiots that drive to the hotspots ruin it for everyone.

Yeah, I mean obviously the post about the person effectively having a party in the front garden is obviously pushing it.

My front garden is relatively small and close to the pavement - if I was to sit right near the house I'd probably be about 2/3m from people walking past. Luckily I've got a back garden so it's not an issue, but if I didn't, would I be able to sit in it and have a drink or whatever - or does this count as being in public? Must apply to a lot of people.

If you can keep your social distance in your front garden then it’s ok. Just because someone has a small front garden doesn’t mean they can’t spread the virus. It’s common sense

if its nearby then cycle there , i havent seen any restrictions on this , for example if the downs are 10 min cycle away etc.

If they are not and you have to driver there then I'd suggest not wise to do it.

If its not local then you will be using petrol , which means you need a garage , touch pumps , interact with other people.

If its walkable / cycle distance then yes.

What your describing , the act sounds fine but unless your car runs on air then that comprimises you and others at some point.

Dr Hutch seems to be making much the same point as someone did on here, regarding a photo from Hove seafront in the pre lockdown days:-

Seems to be the same few examples being chucked about, plus the use of telephoto lenses which massively shorten the view. Propaganda like this doesn't help - ''People in Brighton ignore lockdown...........' etc. Looking the film, struggling to see anyone NOT respecting distancing - walkers and joggers going out of their way to swerve around people, and really not that crowded

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DEt_UY0NNM&feature=youtu.be

Aerial pics give a clearer view of the density of people on the seafront - these in the tweet below are from Saturday morning. Irony being the video in the youtube clip was taken by the same photographer and has completely misrepresented reality - by the shitrag S*n, so no surprise really.

Just a view on the petrol pump bit ..I don’t interact with anyone when I fuel the van up ..pay at pump ..and when finished I was my hands before getting back in the van ..driving somewhere for exercise another argument

No mention either of the fact that Sunday was apparently quieter ...but hey that doesn’t make eye grabbing headlines

You would be breaking the rules though because you should only be in your car for specific reasons; essential shopping, medical needs or traveling too and from work that cannot be done at home.

I don't think people are fully appreciating what this is about. Driving to another location that you otherwise cannot reach by walking / jog or short bike ride means you are potentially taking the virus or bringing it back from one location to another. I don't know where you live, but right now you can skate board on the Old Shoreham Road near West Hove Sainsbury's and not have much issue with cars.

It's not jumping to conclusions, they are the rules at present.

It's not explicitly banned under the rules - it is strongly discouraged of course

14. Can I drive to a national park or other green space to walk?
We advise you to stay local and use open spaces near to your home where possible – do not travel unnecessarily.

You can still go to the park for outdoor exercise once a day but only by yourself or within your household, not in groups.

We ask you to keep 2 metres apart from others outside your household at all times when outdoors.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/coronavirus-guidance-on-access-to-green-spaces

However, exercise is still important for people’s physical and mental wellbeing, so the government has said people can leave their homes for exercise once a day.

Please use the following guidance in order to stay safe:
stay local and use open spaces near to your home where possible – do not travel unnecessarily
you should only go outside alone or with members of your own household
keep at least 2 metres apart from anyone outside your household at all times
gatherings of more than two in parks or other public spaces have been banned and the police will enforce this
if you have a garden, make use of the space for exercise and fresh air
take hygiene precautions when you are outside, and wash your hands as soon as you are back indoors
if walking your dog in areas used by other people, you should walk your dog on a lead to ensure you can safely keep 2 metres away from others. You can find further guidance for pet owners here

I genuinely feel for the people in flats with no outside space, especially families.

I don't see a great issue with someone crossing the road from their flat and sitting in the park reading a book 50 meters from anyone around them - I think the rules could express an hours exercise / private individual recreation. Mental and physical health both incredibly important. I've been going to our park that we walk a short distance to with my son for our hour's exercise and not seen anyone not being incredibly sensible.

Very easy to be critical sat in a garden enjoying a private BBQ and beer in the sunshine delivering judgement on a person suffering on their own with no outside space to speak of.

I think the press have tried to create stories when the British public overall observed the rules with incredible discipline over the weekend. I think the gutter press had their stories ready and no matter what happened, they were going to run with people flouting the rules. As it happened, it was so minor as to really not require reporting.

Think we need to be careful who gets vilified in this crisis.

Agree....but problem is where to draw the line though, and how to enforce it. I suspect what you're suggesting will be some of the early stages of relaxing of lockdown. If the Gov said 'it's OK to go out and sit in the park/on the beach' these places would be quickly mobbed (witness the open spaces the weekend before lockdown, but after the pubs had been shut and sport cancelled etc).

The press are looking for the what appear to be extremely isolated examples of people being stupid - as a % of the population they appear to be miniscule now.

The restrictions aren't in place because doing anything else would be dangerous. They are set as arbitrary limits on activity outside of the home, set to reduce the overall spread to a level which Government project will be manageable for the NHS.

Stopping to sit on your own isn't dangerous, it's simply against the rules. The rules are in place to limit overall activity levels and spread.

We all contribute to the strategy by following the rules. The cumulative impact is hopefully that the NHS has sufficient ICU capacity to cope with the intake.

In addition, the activity which continues to occur will continue to spread the virus and will increase the numbers of people who have had it, which eventually will slow the spread and allow for lockdown measures to be gradually relaxed.

Hope it works out like that!

I think you would have to be quite specific that you were within say a 5min walk of your home, and had your address details on you to demonstrate you don't have a garden if asked. I don't know, as you posted above rules can be interpreted, I still think that is a definitive instruction that you do not travel unnecessarily, and strapping bikes to the car would be unnecessary. Another person may think it's necessary - I can't think of a reason why it would be, roads are so quiet probably never been a better time in 60 years for kids to be out on bikes near their homes.
