Has to be the introduction to one of my biggest pleasures as a small boy before I experienced 'pop' music - the Lone Ranger Theme Tune. Took many years to discover it was the William Tell Overture.

There was an old definition of a highbrow as being someone who, hearing William Tell overture thought of Rossini and not the Lone Ranger

Pretty much anything by Bach.

But Gould's Goldberg Variations are especially good.

Which one? The 1955 or the 1979?

Sat in front of Arvo Part at a concert a few years back (it wasn't of his music). He wasn't in the most expensive seats and seemed very self-effacing. I don't normally bother celebs but I felt I had to shake his hand and tell him how much I loved his music (which I do, I have many CDs of his stuff). He seemed genuinely pleased.

I was just amazed that the guy didn't have a whole crowd of people round him - a very weird experience

Personally I prefer the 1955. But the 1979 is still better than most other recordings.

I prefer the 1955 too - even though I have great affection for the 79 version which was my most played record in the final year of my degree.

The 55 would definitely be one of my Desert Island Discs
