Building a faster road may solve some people's commuting problems but it will not stop accidents. The A27 should be a perfectly safe strech of road for an intelligent person but sadly the world is full of tailgating, mobile phone using, risk-life-and-limb-to-gain-a-three-second-advantage-by-overtaking halfwits. That's not including the drunken drivers, people too old to be let loose on dodgems, 17-year-olds whose Novas are extensions of their penises, etc etc.

By the way, how come the work at Beddingham stops at night and on weekends? That contract could be finished in 60 weeks, not 90, if the workforce was better marshalled.

A lot of the problems on the straight bit are caused by people driving too slowly.

Over 2 pages before someone posts the real cause of the accidents!

I appreciate that the accidents are almost ALWAYS caused by DICKHEADS overtaking when it's not safe to do so. However I could count on the fingers of one hand the amount of times i've done anywhere near 60 along that road in traffic!

I would certainly not overtake in dangerous spots but the problem with that road is there are not enough safe overtaking spots, which as someone else pointed out could be solved by a few sections (at least) of dual carraigeway. If they just stopped people turning right from the 2 junctions along Firle straight it could easily have been made 2 lanes. Same could be said for the straight just after Drucillas heading eastbound and even the straight just before Polegate.

40mph is far to slow for that road, if everyone did 55-60 like they should do, even the DICKHEADS wouldn't need to overtake!

RIP the poor people who lost their lives today x

big signs along the road with slogans like

"overtaking on this road can cause your death"

"keep your distance the person in the car in front does not need to hear your radio"

in short slogans that get the message accross in a light hearted manner

This is the main East West trunk road we are talking about and people here are talking about 40mph limits and cameras. FFS East Sussex has no motorway at all. It's like living in the backwoods. I drove from Dover to Lewes last night and it took nearly 2 hours! Do what the French do, knock down some houses, build some motorways and make the drivers safer. Simple. The road people, including the knob Baker, should hang their heads in shame at the number of fatalities they have allowed to happen. A disgrace!

Possibly, but I would imagine most of the CRASHES are caused by people driving too quickly.

If people could be a bit more patient and considerate then it would save alot of unecessary heartache.

Still, if it means getting to where you are going 7 minutes sooner than you might have otherwise have got there, maybe a fatal head-on crash is worth the risk?

When the safety measures were introduced along the Firle Straight a couple of years ago, a lot of us locals were astonished that the right turning movements at those two junctions weren't banned.

Having said that, the new central reservations that effectively prevent overtaking have had the effect of practically eliminating serious crashes on that stretch of the road.

"The safety of our roads is the priority and we have been identifying areas along the whole of the A27 to carry out improvements and there is a scheme starting at Selmeston in the summer"

We've known that for f***ing years you incompetent twat. Just admit that it is all about funding!    :flameboun

Agree with you, Bry. Even if people are driving slowly there is absolutely no reason on earth why you should run the risk of a potential crash to cut your journey by a couple of minutes. I have abandoned the A27 and go via Storrington. A car overtook five or six cars and only just managed to swerve back in without hitting the car in front of me - we had slowed to about 20mph in a 60 mph zone. :nono: :nono:

Way out west
Accidents may be caused by people driving too fast, but I saw at least 3 people driving and talking on hand held mobiles on the way home from work today, get more Police out on the roads...that is a visible and proven deterrent.

I'd rather see the fine and points for speeding increased. Going 60mph in a 40 zone, should be 6 points and £120, do it twice and you lose your license.

We need more speed cameras and none of them should be marked. More mobile police cars with speed guns, and none of them should be marked either.

I find it absolutely hysterically English that you get warned about a speed camera "excuse me sir, do you mind reducing your speed to the legal limit, I'm about to check your speed, and I'd really hate to fine you"....

Bollocks, you drive the road you obey the rules, they aren't your roads they are the governments and you wanna play on them? then you obey the rules....

There are a lot of complete idiots on the road.

It's these type of people that kill others.

The amount of people I have had barrelling down my arse@ 90mph on the motorway is a joke. You know the ones, the people that leave about a 5 foot gap between them and you. Idiots.

Don't they realise that if you have to break suddenly they are going to smack in to the back of you.

What I do is move over and let these people pass me. I would rather be 10 minutes late to my destination, than not get there at all.

As regards the A27 it seems to get worse not better. I can see lots of Speed Cameras being installed along this stretch in the future.

There is one road out of Luton towards Bedford, I think this suffered from accidents weekly, but now there must be about 15 cameras along this road to deter people from speeding.

I agree with Speed Cameras at accident hotspots. Imagine what it must be like to find out a family member has been killed due to a dangerous driver, and then to find out they are only given 2 years in prison. This is what happens.

I drive this piece of road five days a week and yes I see some terrible driving, but it isn't just confined to that couple of miles between Middle Farm and Selmeston. There is bad driving on show wherever you go. However the fact that eight people have died in the last three years on this stretch of road surely means that there is a serious problem there that needs sorting before more people lose their lives.

Speed camera warning signs are very effective in getting drivers to kill their speed so whether they are " hysterically English " or not there should be more of them. As for obeying the laws of the road maybe a few more Mums should take that into consideration when they are driving and parking around schools?

Drivers shouldn't have to "kill their speed" THATS THE WHOLE POINT!! They shouldn't be speeding!! Don't people get it?

Mums around schools are merely traffic jam creators - not killers....

And you never break the speed limit yeah?

Mums around schools are just thick lard arses who create hazards for kids trying to cross roads near schools because they have to park as near to the school gates as possible.

No I don't! Its not worth it - and where I grew up and learnt to drive it costs about £250 if you get caught doing 30kph over the speeding limit and 4 points, over 45kph you get your license taken on the roadside...

Mum's can do whatever they want re school, just selfish behaviour frankly - I walk everywhere and considering Arthurs first school is about 500 yards away I think we'll be ok walking...
