fatality on A27

Easier said than done i'm affraid BOF. Out of interest what improvements would you like to see to the rail infrastructure?

A 425 km/hr train along the South Coast with dancing girls as entertainment.

I was thinking along the lines of a 'high speed train' from Eastbourne(?) to Southampton(?), stopping at the core stations. Only if there was the demand though.

i would stick a 40mph speed limit between selmeston and beddingham and ban overtaking on this stretch then prehaps these accidents would not be so severe

Thats expecting everybody to obey the speed limit etc. A large part of the reason there are so many accidents everywhere is that people just won't stick to the limits - common sense should prevail but unfortuntately does not in most cases.

Sad news for some family/ies

Until recently, most fatalities on this stretch of the A27 happened on the Firle Straight. Since some safety improvements were done by the Highways Agency, the problem has now moved about a mile up the road to the first place people think they can now overtake like lunatics. This despite the fact that there are double white lines down the centre of the road at precisely the points that the idiots choose to overtake.

I like the idea of dancing girls BOF you could be on to a winner there.

They used to run regular East coast/West coast direct services but they found they got in the way at Brighton station and ended up causing chaos.

Ah! I hadn't really thought of the ramifications. :D

Like the roads we need rail investment as well. A high-speed line might be out of the question (and is probably not strictly necessary) but it would be possible to re-design the track layout at Brighton so trains could go straight from the East coastway to the West coastway lines without having to pull into Brighton station and 'change ends'. Yes it would be quite a big development (and would mean re-positioning the depot and sidings) but it could be done.

(Do they still call them the East and West Coastway lines BTW?)

Put in some kind of barrier down the middle, No overtaking !

that would only result in even more tailgating which after causing an accident would make it impossible for the emergency services to get to the scene

The cost would totaly outweigh the benefits and it will never happen.

Sadly I think you're right so we're back to Option 1 - to improve East/West travel links in Sussex the A27 MUST be upgraded.

True. but I for one would rather be tailgated by someone for a few miles, then enjoy a nice head on at 60mph !
And as for emergency access the barriers would not be for the full stretch of the road as reidents would need access too.

But in the meantime ... some simple physical safety measures at the known black spots should be introduced as soon as possible - backed up by a 40mph speed limit at the dangerous locations, supported by permanent speed cameras.

I would widen the road and put in 2 lanes as it is head-on overtaking that is causing the problem.
In an ideal world so would I but it's the problem is buying up the land to do it .
That would be the problem

That would just encourage overtaking and lead to more serious crashes - particularly at locations such as Charleston, where the road is straight enough, but the undulations mean that some drivers are unaware of traffic coming towards them - although it should be bloody obvious to anyone with an ounce of sense.

Not alongside the A27 between Lewes and Alfriston. Between them, Lords Gage and Hampden own the lot. Both want to see something done.

It makes you wonder how many people have to die before they install some simple measure's. :nono:
