, 'If you put in more calories than you burn off, you put on weight'. SIMPLE.

Quite. Straightforward mathematics.

On the stand up front, that reminds me of Jimmy Carr:

Carr is coming to end of a rant about lazy tubsters, when a woman stands up in the audience..

Heckler; "You're being ignorant. Some people have glandular problems."

Carr: "Glandular problems? Do you have glandular problems? What are you taking for that? Pies?"

All fat people should be made to eat celery only.

It takes more calories in the chewing of celery than you get from the stick itself, unless you cover it in honey.

Therein lies the problem.

You could bring in a law stating that big folk can only eat celery, but rather than buying raw celery, or knocking up a tasty celery fricasee, they'd waddle down to the Asda freezer aisle and buy deep-fried battered celery twizzlers.

I could spend a great deal of time going into reasons why you (and others who have posted on here) are wrong, but apparantly I'm too lazy to do so...

Anyway - I am fat, and am trying to do something about it (gym, healthy eating etc). Can you explain your post above, in particular how I am "stupid" and have "no sense of citizenship"?

As for the tool below who says that fat people are the cause of 99.9% of the world's problems - unbelievable. If God was a fatty, then maybe. However, the pictures I've seen of him suggest that he's quite a slim chap....

You've seen pictures of God? Wow, what does he look like?

Just thought I would mention two little episodes that I have witnessed recently.
At a car Boot:
A mobile toilet block was in a corner of the field. As we all know these mobile loos are not that big but most suitable if you are average size. Standing outside waiting for the wife I heard a commotion and turned to see a real large young lady of about 20yrs (and possibly 20st) complaining in a very angry loud voice that 'there is not enough room to swing a cat in there'
I am sure there wasn't after she had occupied a stall! How she managed the whole proceedure I will never know.
At a supermarket Cafe:
Overheard a very obese customer complaining to the cafe manager that she had hurt herself negotiating the tables. Berating the manager for the aisle being so narrow she banged into a table edge.

In both instances I would have loved to have said what I was thinking!

Any good mathmaticians out there?
Question: out of 100% obese people how many are likely to really have a medical reason for being fat?

I understand that Jamie Oliver has come under flack recently for being a bit tubby and in a recent interview he was questioned why he was trying to peddle healthy eating in America when he himself has become a bit of a bloater. He told the interviewer to f*** off.

There's a difference though from people a bit tubby because they eat a lot of wholesome good food, and those that are tubby because they sit around watching telly and eating turky twizzlers all day.

Is there a way of calculating what mass someone needs to reach in order for them to stop WALKING and start WADDLING? I imagine you would need to use height and body fat as other variables.

I was once sat at breakfast at a hotel in Glasgow with a couple of work colleagues, including my then boss. The tables were in a line, with a gap of perhaps 2 feet between them. As we were sat eating, a fat lady on the adjacent table, decided to pay another visit to the food station, so got up and shuffled out through the gap, facing towards her own table. The problem was, that her massive fat arse, was SO massive and fat, that the 2 foot gap was insuficient, and even though she was pressed against her own table, said bottom still hung over our table by several inches. As she shuffled sideways, her ample rear swept the toast off my boss' side plate onto the floor. She didn't feel it at all obviously, and waddled merrily on her way to source more sausages.

Of course, but as you say, it's not healthy but it's the sort of extremes people go to. I've never been a large person, but I've never had a problem with people who are, either. I don't understand why some people dislike fat people so much, it's an obsession for some people and I don't understand it. When these people then call all fat people stupid and ugly, I have a problem with that. Partly because it is pathetic, but mainly because it's so beautifully ironic.

In answer to the tread title, neither. Fat people are neither a scourge, nor unfortunate victims.

Being a so called "fat bastard" myself I thank you for that comment. I don't consider myself a big eater, my 10 year old stick thin son eats more than me. I'm lead a very active life, running a smallholding, tending to my animals, constantly fencing, in the process of building a huge barn, about to build a piggery, work from 7 in the morning until late at night. I drink on average 8 pints a week.

But I'm a fat bastard, love me, hate me I really don't care but there's no need for some of the posters to be so f***ing rude.

I remember being served in Uncle Sams when the large fat server asked if I wanted to "go large" with my meal.

I had a think and said no - very tempted to say I did not want to end up like you.

The fact is that yes, people are all different sizes and shapes and some people are just bigger than others. BUT..............if you look at the obese and take in to account the amount who have reached that size and why they have you will find that the VAST majority are the way they are because they eat too much and too much of the wrong thing and do very little if no excercise at all. Then it becomes a vicious circle because they can't exercise and just opening another Wagon Wheel makes them wheeze. As stated here plenty of times before it is not rocket science that if you put more calories in than you burn off its only going to one way. Wobbly

JO desrves that flak IMO. He has built a career out of promoting a healthier lifestyle, and he's clearly not prepared to commit to such himself. One look at the guy tells you he's never done any exercise. Chubby, fat tongued chancer.

Don't disagree but there's no need to tar all fatties with the same brush. That's generalisation but to be insulting as well is crass.

Theres a bloke who walks past the window at work daily who has been designated 'sumo' and is rarely seen walking through the business park without a big mac attached to his face. Have also noticed that larger people have a taste for coca cola. As most sane people have already said...eat too much...dont excercise...and you will get fat.
