Get out walking more, seriously, start with small distances and work up.

As the man says going walking hour a day and the weight will start dropping. Put that together with a healthy diet and results will come

My problem, and I am not trying to make excuses, is that I suffer with COPD so after a very short while whether it be walking from a bus stop, or the car or doing anything strenuous is that I am then out of breath and struggling.

Get a dog. That helps.
Is great advise, assuming you are up for the commitment.
A happy dog is a well fed and walked dog.
Twice a day, 365 days a year, an hour off lead free running, and at least 20mins on the lead.

Your gut will diminish, assuming the pub isn't a 15min lead walk away!
And you'll have one seriously happy companion.

You could always start off walking a dog from your nearby pet rescue centre.

Eat to nourish a small person - not to maintain an overweight one.

Become friendly with hunger, don't think of it as a terrible enemy that you MUST sort out asap.
The fridge is calling you? Walk AWAY from the fridge.
Hungry before bed? Drink water.
'Snacks' between regular meals? Sort that out - get low-cal water crackers and nonfat spreads or butter-substitutes and put a bit of caviar or lox on it if you must snack. There may be salt there, but it doesn't need to be much.
Shop when not hungry, buy healthy. Cut down on carbohydrates like potatoes/bread/pasta, you really don't need them that much.
Drink more water.
Don't pile in on the sugar. If you must have deserts or sweet things after a meal - eat high-cocoa chocolate or chew gum! Cut down the sugar in your drinks too, it's not needed.
Knock down BEER consumption. Enjoy a pint, but why 'down' it? Get a water with your beer and sip that first, then enjoy the taste of beer and not just the replenishment.

Exercise. Anything - but walking is excellent because it also takes you away from the fridge and occupies your mind. Find good public footpaths and list them for regular use, you'll appreciate the scenery.

That's a shame. best not get a dog, then.
I guess the thing to do is work out 'what goes in', and how much gets burned off.
Try and moderate all the good stuff, beer, chocolate etc, and see if there's any scope in your day to up the fitness.
Initially a little will go a long way, which might spur you on, in the long run.

Oh and as NMH says, I bet you don't drink anywhere near enough water.

go walking. and do planks. sit ups are pretty useless unless you are ripped. its better to do cardio to burn fat off and an adominal stretch (plank) to help 'flatten' the fat. If you can't do that much cardio then you have to just eat less. do a calorie calculator Calorie Calculator to work out what you need to eat to lose weight. you CAN lose weight by not doing that much exercise however your feel more hungry as you'll need to eat less. I prefer eating more and just doing more exercise to stay lean.

You still need to exercise. Part of the reason while you will be struggling will be your lack of fitness.

Walking is ideal - you can do it at your own pace, stop when you need to, build it up gradually. But you've got to start. Set yourself a sensible programme, which builds up the amount you walk over a period of weeks and months (I recently did this with running, couldn't run for more than 2 minutes without feeling knackered. Within 8 weeks i could run for half an hour)

Due to your weight, age and lung condition it is essential you first go to the doctors. They will be able to suggest the right programme for you. Then it is up to you to see it through.

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Cut out booze.
Cut down on red meat.
Get rid of pastry and the like.
Skimmed milk.
Don't have a heavy meal before bed.
Eat oily fish.
Only eat low fat cheese.
Cut down on bread/butter.
If you feel hungry, you might be bored or thirsty.
Go swimming.
Walk more (buy a pedometer).

The ratio in obtaining decent substainable weight loss is weighted 40% exercise and 60% Diet. Diet is more important than any exercise, get this right and you will see a difference quicker than spending hours running in the gym . Obviously there are certain exercises to tone up that area as mentioned by previous NSC'ers Crunches, sit ups, planks, medicine ball work etc but that wont shift the fat from that area.

Unfortunately your chemical make up seems to be that you store the majority of your fat cells around your gut. Not uncommon. There is No WAY to exercise in a certain way or order to remove only certain fat cells and from a certain area. Fat will be lost in whatever order your body decides. But fear not it will be lost if you lose weight that is for certain.

Be strong and strict in your diet, when exercising make sure it is continual for at least 25 minutes in one go, it doesnt have to be strenuous but it will have to be continual for best results. Without boring you with the details Fat is burnt in the presence of oxygen, in other words you must be doing aerobic exercies, for at least 25 minutes and try and keep your heart rate between 60-75% of your maximum, if you cant monitor this try and keep around a 7/10 on your own rate of perceived exertian.

Try to be mentally tough and work out simple exercise schedule and diet plan and try and stick to it..

Best of Luck mate

Have you tried the Adkins diet?

(No, seriously... there seems to be some very sound advise on this thread, particularly about checking with your doctor first. Good luck!)

Do as many of these as you can:

Lift weights heavier the better
Do some cardio (any is better than none)
Ignore sit up bullshit as you cant spot reduce fat
Clean up your diet
Reduce cals to 1750-2000
Eat brown rice, pasta or bread when you have them and reduce how often
Give up / cut down alcohol
drink plenty of water 3+ ltrs per day
Dont cheat or if you do not often
Stick with it

Sounds boring but you will soon get into the swing

Mint is supposed to be good if you're always hungry - either chews some gum or brush your teeth to stave off hunger.
