Leg out of the bed
If only we had a Gerrard or a Rui Costa to knock sixty yard, defence splitting throughballs onto the toes of a lightning quick c/f. The crowds would come flooding back...

Any loan prospects out there?

MarK Gall was quick......but it has to be either Neil Smillie who was lightning quick of the mark or Darren Hughes.

I was ballboy when Darren Hughes was playing LB at the goldstone, and he was on my side. He even beat me to a couple of balls when I was 12, and I was the fastest in my class !!!!

Also remember reading something about him being fastest around the league at the time

Rumour has it he was bought by Bamber for Mullery by mistake; he was on the way home from a game he told Mike Bamber he wanted their No7 but got his number wrong and he wanted another player cant remember his name but it will come to me, a well known ex Man Utd midfielder at Shrewsbury with Hughes, Bamber then went and signed the No 7.

Just remembered the name of the player Mullery wanted Gerry Daly

he wasn't signed by mullery it was after he'd gone. I thought it was barry Lloyds era when Darren Hughes played. Ended up going back to Port Vale I think

Darren Hughes came from Shrewsbury then left us for Port Vale after about 1 season was pretty sure he was the player involved in the mix up. Cannot think of another player we got from them. Wasnt Mullery manager 2nd time around about then just before he was sacked and BL took over.

A similar thread to this was started a few months ago and I think that you're all wrong.

The fastest Albion player has to be Frankie Howard, (please, no "Ooohh Missus" jokes), who, when receiving the ball, would push it 30 yards past the opposition fullback and then absolutely leave him for dead.

Any other fans who watched the Albion in the mid fifties should be able to verify this.

I've only been watching since the mid-60s so I can't comment on Howard but I'll go for Dave Armstrong too - he was dazzlingly quick. Crap footballer though.

tony towner was fast down the wing, dribbling the ball to the goal line not just running into space,

pity every cross ended up in the north/south stand

Which is why he came off the bench so often..... frightened tired defences with his speed... think after a while they realised they could leave him out there running as he really wasn't going anywhere... neither he nor his crosses. Pity. There was another player who was fast and came off the bench like Towner in the mid-early-late seventies... not Potts but someone else... who was it? I know he never made the grade but was good off the bench in 76-77 I think.
