It doesn’t really matter how he comes across to the fans tbh. The worry might be is whether the players find him uninspiring and dull as well. That does matter.

I think you are in danger of projecting your feelings about what you think of Hürzeler onto the players.

Professional footballers are inspired by their own stats and winning games - they are inspired by other players that have gone before them. They are inspired by encouragement and affirmation of those that manage them like any other human being.

Roberto De Zerbi was a good coach, I was inspired by the football we played under him, especially in the first season and so too, I think were the squad but if you think young professional footballers are inspired by the tantrums of perfectionists who are frustrated with the apparent lack of tools at their disposal to meet their impossibly high targets, then I think you don’t understand that bullying people and frightening them, doesn’t inspire anyone - it breeds resentment and at worst, destroys self-confidence and just becomes counterproductive to achieving success.

Our team of expensive, exciting, off-the-wall flair players cannot be moulded into a robotic, well oiled, obedient machine.
Expensive? Our record signing is 40m isn't he?

Hardly expensive in premier league terms. Especially the part of the premier league we aspire (or some insist) to be playing in.

See also wages.

Guessing you’d put someone like Mourinho in that category? A guy who’s (in your book) ‘bullied’ players to two champions leagues!

Those aren’t my feelings about Hürzeler, I think he’s ok, but certainly more than a few fans seem to think that and as I say, I think it’s a problem if the players find that as well.

Management isn’t just Hürzeler v De Zerbi’s type managers. There’s definitely good managers who can have passion and inspire but don’t bully or frighten people (though has anyone ever actually accused RDZ of that? All of the players I see mention him speak highly of him).

I do think it matters how the players see their coach though, they absolutely should inspire them because the players have to buy in and believe in what the manager is doing or they “lose the hanging room” as it were. The manager is the first person they should be listening to and following.

I’d prefer to think the players see a pissed off angry manager behind closed doors, rather than someone playing to the gallery. No need to take the piss out of his English either. It’s light years better than the previous incumbent.
Indeed Hughton used to go mental with them behind closed doers. Ranting at Rotherham for an hour after the game in the dressing room.

I am not convinced that he has the experience to bring the best out in the players we have. I think GP and RDZ would get much better out of them.

Happyish to give him a season but f*** me he’s a bore to listen to

What Roberto De Zerbi achieved with us was nothing short of a miracle. We didn’t have a top six squad yet he managed to get us to the Europa League. It’s essentially the equivalent of getting Bournemouth/Brentford to a top six finish - near impossible.

Such an incredible manager and an amazing person, I am starting to appreciate him a lot more. Don’t think we will have another manager like him for a long time, maybe ever!

I specifically was responding to the accusation that Hürzeler was uninspiring and ‘meh’ and that RDZ was a better coach because of his perfectionism and hot temperament. I don’t believe that success and treating people with respect are mutually exclusive.

Our footballers are there because they are already inspired by the idea they could be amongst the world’s best - you don’t get to first team PL without being inspired.

Imo - you’d more likely get players reacting negatively than positively to a bullying style of management these days and for good reason, it’s certainly not tolerated in a modern football working environment like Brighton who prides itself on being people centred and and progressive in the treatment of its employees.

Dull doesn't matter. Players take a secure and stabile manager over a clown most times.

Fab does however have nature against him. In this moment particularly his age and general lack of merits work against him. He has to work harder than others to remain the authority.

If he can ride out this bad trend there will be a lot more belief in Fabian and "the process".

I'm definitely not "Fab out" and don't think 1-1 against West Ham is bad... but if we haven't won after the Ipswich game on January 16, it starts to look heavy turning the thing around.

In the field
I've said all along that the RDZ European qualification season and the group games would represent the high point of following the Albion. I still think that's right and I think that's what colouring my view of things right now.

Granted, Bournemouth away last season was pound for pound one of the worst albion performances I've ever seen.

Doesn't wipe away the absolute best of RDZ that we saw though.

Those days where we'd turn up to play a top team and almost expect to win.

Granted, they were shortlived but f*** me they were amazing.

I just mourn them and I can't move on from the repositioning of where we are currently.

I'll try harder for some perspective, but I'm not getting very far.

Yes and no imo. Maybe we can't produce a team like the 22/23 that with a couple of friendly ref decision and other fine margins could have finished 4th or even 3rd. Maybe that is the peak indeed, its possible.

But I'm quite certain we'll play in Europe again within in the not too distant future and perhaps the Europa adventure itself could be more successful than last time around.

I'm not optimistic (or pessimistic) about reaching the heights of the final months of 21/22 and then 22/23 anytime in the foreeseable future. But I think we can mount a real strong challenge for top 7 next season.

I've said since day uno that this season is likely going to be a quite boring 8-12th finish, likely with a substantial point margin to the Europa teams. Seems like it'll be in the lower areas of that given we have United and Tottenham behind us which I think we might not at the end of the season.

This thread is weighted by its title rather than its content.
There is a large percentage of replies that are very supportive of Fabian Hürzeler.
The title should at least be edited to Fab OUT or IN?
The current thread title and the number of replies make it appear a majority want him out which clearly isn’t the case.
Our young coach and new young players are still settling into their new surroundings and new country. They have produced performances which have resulted in our second best Premier League position at this point in the season.
And they are only going to get better.

Fab IN.

One of the funniest things about reading all the posts of fans frothing about this, that and the other is the how long these people are giving him in the job until they will stand for no more.

The arrogance is outstanding :lolol:

As @Change at Barnham says, the vast majority of responders are more circumspect and grounded than the title suggests.

Hürzeler is not a manager to impose a system onto players, he is a manager who develops a system according to the players he has. That is the main difference between him and RDZ and why the system is taking time to formulate a recognisable shape ( hindered too by various injuries).

I think we need to look back on 2022/3 as an exceptional season but certainly not a unique one and let’s not keep referring to it as an impossible yardstick by which to measure the success of every subsequent season. We are a mid-table/top 10 Club and to think we should be more than that is entitlement - to think we could be more, is hope - that is a difference it wouldn’t hurt sometimes to remember.
