Mr Burns. This is the thread I meant to post in. Love the thread and some good banter and good discussions on about the topic you started. Nice to know you can have a nice and healthy debate. Think you are an ok poster and you air your views when you get fed up with the team. That's what us Brighton fans do. It's called debate and look forward to reading more of your threads.

Don't get me wrong if I think you're wrong then I will raise my opinion but you have been right in the thread title.

I agree.

Absolute attention seeking drivel. Can't believe I read all 5 pages.

We came up from League 1 last year as champions, have had a reasonable budget for this season which was spent wisely. If we get lucky and make the play-offs then Gus has performed a miracle. If we finish anywhere between 8-12 then that's where I expected us to finish. Gus is laying the foundations for something spectacular in the next few seasons. Relax and enjoy the ride.

The problem with this board is people can be so myopic after one game and need to look at the bigger picture. Gus had suspensions for the Burnley game and maybe some other players weren't fit enough to start but were fit enough for the bench. So he may have decided not to risk them and save them for the Reading game. This is the first time Gus has been a manager at championship level, he is learning as he goes and we are knocking on the door of the play-offs. Imagine next season with a bigger budget, more players knowing about the rise of Brighton and Hove Albion and the brand of football that gets played here. This will ensure we attract a better quality of player to the club.

Good Post - however we were very poor at Burnley, and IMO he picked the wrong team - three wingers on the bench, plus Barnes and a GK (plus we missed Bridcutt, Reyes was really poor and although I'm biased, the ref gave us nothing)

Overall though, how anyone can be disapointed withthe season is beyond me - we've far exceeded my expectations.

It seems that there are two main complaints against Gus on this thread, namely why doesn't he play wingers and why is he so stubborn as to not change our style. From my 'vantage' point-that is, on the other side of the world, relying on match commentary, interviews, reports and the odd game I get to see live there are, in my opinion, some fairly logical answers to these questions.

For most of the season, when talking about where to improve the team, the general consensus has been the fullbacks and centre midfield. If we play with two wingers you need to have two defensively decent fullbacks. For most of the season we don't appear to have had that. The signings of Mattock and Reyes have hopefully addressed that particular problem.

However, Poyet has repeatedly stated that he wants us to control and dominate games. To do this you need a strong centre midfield. Unfortunately, by most peoples own admission, we don't have two midfielders capable of doing that yet. So to (attempt to get) the control and dominance that Poyet wants we have to play an extra player in midfield. If we play with two c.m's who aren't capable of controlling the game then no matter how good the wingers are they're not going to be particularly dangerous as they won't be seeing too much of the ball and thus the service to the two strikers will be limited.

The only way I can think of for two wingers to see more of the ball if the c.m is not that strong, is to bypass the c.m and hit the wings directly. However, this is a non starter under Gus as he has said time and again that he wants to build something long term and lasting here. He wants to make the club synonymous with a particular style and philosophy of football., namely a passing possession game That's why he's getting all the age groups and teams to play the same way. Inevitably this is something that will take time. Some players will be able to play it, some will be able to adapt to it while others won't. The ones that can't will be moved on to be replaced by new players(some of whom, unfortunately, will also be unable to fully play it, regardless of how good they may be).

The one thing needed to ensure that this project ends in success is consistancy. If the style changes for short term success then the long term suffers. The desired style won't become embedded in the fabric of the club. If the manager is willing to change styles regularly then there will be a lack of belief and confidence in the style that he ultimately wants to play. It can be a slow, occasionally dull, occasionally painful but ultimately essential process to go through if you want to create an overarching club philosophy.

It seems to me that Poyet has a grand vision for the club. Maybe it will turn out to be too grand and is doomed to failurebut all the time he is steering us on an upward trajectory then I am willing to buy into it. And that's why it is important to remember and appreciate where we were two and a half years ago as opposed to now.

Of course, these are all just my opinions and it may well be that in a few hours Poyet will go attack crazy and go against everything that he' tried to do up to now...
I think you may have hit the nail on the head there mate. Thats a brilliant summing up.

I would say at the moment though, you're in the best place to witness it, because actually travelling and sitting and watching at times is painful. At times I wish I was on the other side of the world listening to it on the radio. In fact on Friday I'd rather have been in bed with the trots.

THe main issue I have, is at this stage of the season, when we seem to be fading fast, he needs to grow a pair, and just go for it. We don't have the CMs at the moment to play his system, which makes it even more amazing Razak didn't fit in, because after his debut he looked the real deal, and its almost as if Gus got to him, confused the shit out of him, and the poor lad didn't have a clue what was happening, because after that he went downhill.

And its the same with the others. At the moment, just let them play football Gus. His system is not understood by all the players, and it shows. Switch to a nice simple system, and we will tear teams apart with the attackers we have.

In his system now, we have Vicente who is probably the best player ever to wear the stripes, and we've won one in six games he's started. It's just not working, and there has to be a time Gus abandons these tactics and tries to save the season, because if we carry on like we have over the past few weeks, we'll end up 9th or 10th.

I'd also question why he signed so many wingers if he's not ready to use them.

If thats the case, it would appear we have lots more cash to splash for a CM as soon as the right one comes along, but I just hope knows what the right sort it.

If thats the case, I'd also expect to see a major clearout and transfer listing of most of our central midfielders in a few weeks time, but I'll be amazed if there is.

In all fairness I think things will improve long term, but I'd rather live in the now, and we have absolutely nothing to lose now, and if he continues to play this boring brand of football until the end of the season, and we fail, which we will, I can see him coming in for some flack, and we all know his ego isn't going to take that very well.

In a daring swoop, sources close to the club have managed to get full details of Brighton's manager Gus Poyets master plan tatics for this season. In a dawn raid in fantasy land, the full plan was uncovered. Read full details below

0-0 Start of Game

Plan A - Cancel out opposition by plassing the ball amongst defenders. Try and tire out the other sides players then bring on a couple of wingers late on and snatch a point. If it works people will think your subs are a master stroke.
Plan B - See plan A
Plan C - See Plan B

If we go one nil down.

If all fails, throw a hissy fit and walk off in a huff. People will put it down to your South American genes, and forgive you. Some may even love you for it. Hell you may even get a standing ovation when your strange team selection has just seen your team dump out of he play off places. (yes people actually clapped when he stromed off with 8 minutes to go (including injury time) yesterday)

Always always blame the referee. Very important to remember this. Most others manager also employ this tatic, so it a free one, not often looked into any further by supporters. Will help out many times. But off course remember not to never ever say why. This could catch you out. Just use the excuse you don't want an FA fine. People will buy this over and over again.

Remember the club were in a shit state for the last ten years, so always look to the past if all else fails, and remind people where we where, and how lucky we are. This will apease 90% of followers for good long time.

And remember to keep linking yourself and refusing to rule yourself out of top jobs. Even though Chelsea and Tottenham would not come anywhere near you, or ever even think about offering you the managers job there, its always a good idea to keep yourself linked to them, and then people will beleive you to be a genius and never never dare question your tatics.

...and remember ALWAYS ALWAYS believe your own hype.

Oh yer :lolol::lolol:

Well that tactic didn't even work today :(
