"Bellingham was seen making a crotch-grabbing gesture after scoring an overhead kick in stoppage time. The Real Madrid player denied it was aimed at England's opponents, saying on social media that it was an inside-joke directed towards some close friends".

Chinny reckon.

Definitely plausible and it was most certainly not a ' suck on this ' gesture to the opposition or fans who might have given him stick! :sneaky:

What "overachievement"?

These are the teams you beat in the 2018 World Cup: Panama, Tunisia and Sweden.

At the time, ANY Premier League player would have walked into either of these teams. Henderson (Liverpool), Alli (Tottenham) and Henderson (Liverpool) vs Larsson (AIK), Tovionen (Toulouse) and Ekdal (Hamburg)... And don't get me started on the Panama and Tunisia teams... where's the achievement? How did England overachieve in 2018 through beating three of the worst teams in the tournament, drawing against Colombia and losing against Belgium x2 and Croatia?
As a swede you might not be fully aware of quite how low the bar has been set for England and quite how regularly we fail to get over it.

The England team and squad that went to WC 2018 was as weak as any in my life time. It was coming off the back of 10 years of absolute dogshite performances in tournaments.

2016, knocked out by ICELAND. After a group stage where we drew with Slovakia and Russia and needed a last minute winner against Wales.

2014 knocked out in group stage after the first two games.

2012 parked the bus to a qf penalty defeat to Italy in the most self harm inflictingly boring game of football I've ever seen.

2010 smashed 4-1 by Germany in the last 16 after toiling to draws against the U.S and Algeria and squeaking a 1-0 win against Slovenia

2008. Oh. Didn't even qualify.

We stunk the place out in every one of those tournaments(apart from 2008 because...). There was a real disconnect and toxicity surrounding the team at that point and expectations were low. So low that even the bookies didn't rate our chances and no one was thinking that Football was coming home.

So based off of those previous five tournaments and where everyone's expectations were we overachieved.

Then there's the overall historical context. We'd only ever been to a wc semi final twice, the last time being 28 years earlier where a team loaded with talent laboured to a draw against ROI, laboured to a win against Egypt, laboured to a last minute of extra time win against Belgium, laboured to an extra time win against Cameroon(needing 2 penalties to do so). This is important because this is the team that was said to have also overachieved and is what prompted the post that you quoted.

Other than that we'd only managed two w.c knock out wins in the 6 tournaments between 1990 and 2018, failing to even qualify in 1994. So 94, didn't qualify, 98, last 16, 2002 quarter final, 2006, quarter final, 2010 last 16, 2014 group stage. So beating Columbia on penalties and then beating Sweden was a genuine shock and joy.

Also, Just for fun I'll chuck in our Euro performances in the same time frame:

92, group stage, 96 - semi final!, 2000, group stage, 2004 quarter final, 2008 didn't qualify, 2012, quarter final, 2016 last 16(ICELAND!!!)

I can't remember ever going into a tournament with the nation having lower expectations than we did in 2018.

So, in comparison to all of that, we overachieved.

And, to reiterate, if a team with Shilton, Pearce, Walker, Barnes, Waddle, Beardsley, Gascoigne and Linekar in it overachieved by making the semi finals then it's fair to say the 2018 version with a CENTRAL MIDFIELD of Alli, Lingaard and Henderson definitely did.

A red and a one match ban isn’t going to help our cause too much. What happened with the Argie goalie idiot who misused his golden glove award?

Reading the link, a fine seems like the obvious answer. And cards should be appealable no?

Some of the Slovakian players comments about fancying it against us clearly got under the skin of some of our players, hence Bellinghams "gesture" at their bench after his goal.

Good player, but he's also got a touch of the Maupays about him.
