Umpiring has been absolutely shocking in this series, why so bad?

Get Denley opening or out of the side. Be strict with Bairstow and tell him we need him to focus on batting, and promote him up the order, 3 or 4 to make Root happier. Buttler and Foakes are capable wicket keepers and one of them should be in the side batting at 7. Roy should be batting 6. Stokes 5. I’d also give Broad or Stokes the captaincy and let Root focus on batting again.

Fed up being not very much for 1 each game. Will be not very much for 2 very soon.

Agree with most of that, however Bairstow’s batting average when he doesn’t keep is half of what it is when he does.

It’s all well and good saying promote him up the order but he struggles there and is no different to playing Roy as an opener.

Spot on about Denly opening and Roy batting lower.

Relying heavily on VAR, umpires will only get worse.

We've had the DRS system in Cricket for a while now, and have seen plenty of decent umpiring performances in recent times. This has been particularly bad.

Superb bowling from the Aussies it had to be said. Once again we are reliant on Burns, who was thought to be a walking wicket before this series.

Imagine in test cricket having some discipline and just blocking the new ball for 10/15 overs, seems those days are gone got to feel for Broad and Archer, let down time and time again by the ill discipline of the batters.

Seeing that cheating **** who shouldn't be on the pitch celebrating those catches is very galling.

Not really. You often get more license to play your shots in the middle order whereas opening bat is a very specialist position that involves far higher than average levels of attrition. Roy is a talented batsman (as we saw in the world cup) with absolutely no patience, so I agree with The Wizard. The problem is, we have some good players in the middle order already.

What we don't have is many limited but belligerent openers. I'd be tempted to ask Root to open

That about Surrey 2nds was obviously said tongue in cheek.

Surely, SURELY, there is a decent youngish opener and number three, with sound technique and a good temperament on the county circuit? Surely?
Is this a result of 20/20?

With this batting line up we can kiss goodbye to getting the ashes back. Quite possibly even after this test.

His poor form was early in his career. That’s why he wants to keep the gloves, feels like he needs two strings to his bow to keep him playing if one fails. He scored a century in Sri Lanka batting at 3 nine months ago.

Root needs to be dropped I’m afraid. Go and play county cricket for a while

Who gave Stevie Wonder the umpiring job anyway? No surprise that this guy didn’t umpire the second test and the standard of umpiring there was much better.

Root comes in so early every test you might as well have him open, I get the criticism of him as a captain but he’s been out to two absolute rippers in those last 2 ducks

That is exactly what I said after the 2nd test except that I would drop Roy full stop and bring in Curran with Denly opening, JB at 3, Root 4, Stokes 5, Buttler 6, Curran 7, etc. Stokes captain.

Buttler is not a Test batsman and Curran at number 7 is too high. Having Stokes playing as a frontline batsman is worrying enough. He's grown in maturity but he's no Kallis.

I find it astonishing that there are considered to be no batsmen in the shires ready for a call up. The England team resembles a one day squad.

I disagree on Curren. He’s a genuine batsman and can definitely bat at 7. Issue being, the balance of the side looks off with him, Stokes and Woakes. Stokes is a better batter and Woakes is the better bowler, so Curren cannot fit into that side unless a batsman up the order is dropped. But then you’re left with a side with 3 frontline seamers, 2 all rounders and a spinner. England are not short of players wanting to bat 7 too!

I think we need to pick a player who actually opens in red ball cricket.

Sadly there aren’t many about ? Duckett, although his test career so far hasn’t been great it was brief.... although he had a few issues with some other players didn’t he ?
