I disagree on Curren. He’s a genuine batsman and can definitely bat at 7. Issue being, the balance of the side looks off with him, Stokes and Woakes. Stokes is a better batter and Woakes is the better bowler, so Curren cannot fit into that side unless a batsman up the order is dropped. But then you’re left with a side with 3 frontline seamers, 2 all rounders and a spinner. England are not short of players wanting to bat 7 too!

In an ideal world we would have Stokes at 6 or 7 interchangeable with Bairstow if he keeps.

Trouble is, the top order is so weak that much is done out of necessity.

If the Curran boy batted at 7 then that would show a weakness above because there have been forced promotions.

Is there anything more English than being 20-3 with 2 batsmen in on no score? It used to be that our top order was good and the middle order would calypso callapso.

Feels like our best batsman are down the order, reverse batting order anyone? Leach showed more opening against Ireland than Roy has shown all summer. :lolol:

He needs to get his touch back. Not going to if he plays like his done so far in this series

Doesn’t help that every single innings he’s in within the first 10 overs does it? In every innings he’s played this series he’s been in before the 10 over mark, he’s been out twice in a row to absolute rippers can’t be dropping one of our only good batsman, not exactly bereft with options at 3 are we.

Root has been consistent for a long period. He's had one and a half poor Tests.

What England need is the other batsman stepping up when he fails. There lays the problem.

He got a delivery with his number on it today.

He's one player I'm not worried about.

Indeed. The problem isn’t the batsman who get out to good balls, it’s the ones who make poor decisions that annoy me more.

Doesn’t help but he’s a world class batsman he should have the technique to overcome that but at the moment he hasn’t. His footwork has been found very wanting.

This. For me, one of the major duties of an opening batsman is to see off the new ball, almost "protecting" those coming in at 3 or 4. All the time our openers are dogshit, Root should not be batting at 3.
