Umpiring has been absolutely shocking in this series, why so bad?
Get Denley opening or out of the side. Be strict with Bairstow and tell him we need him to focus on batting, and promote him up the order, 3 or 4 to make Root happier. Buttler and Foakes are capable wicket keepers and one of them should be in the side batting at 7. Roy should be batting 6. Stokes 5. I’d also give Broad or Stokes the captaincy and let Root focus on batting again.
Fed up being not very much for 1 each game. Will be not very much for 2 very soon.
Relying heavily on VAR, umpires will only get worse.
Not really. You often get more license to play your shots in the middle order whereas opening bat is a very specialist position that involves far higher than average levels of attrition. Roy is a talented batsman (as we saw in the world cup) with absolutely no patience, so I agree with The Wizard. The problem is, we have some good players in the middle order already.
What we don't have is many limited but belligerent openers. I'd be tempted to ask Root to open
Imagine in test cricket having some discipline and just blocking the new ball for 10/15 overs, seems those days are gone got to feel for Broad and Archer, let down time and time again by the ill discipline of the batters.
Agree with most of that, however Bairstow’s batting average when he doesn’t keep is half of what it is when he does.
It’s all well and good saying promote him up the order but he struggles there and is no different to playing Roy as an opener.
Spot on about Denly opening and Roy batting lower.
Root needs to be dropped I’m afraid. Go and play county cricket for a while
That is exactly what I said after the 2nd test except that I would drop Roy full stop and bring in Curran with Denly opening, JB at 3, Root 4, Stokes 5, Buttler 6, Curran 7, etc. Stokes captain.
Is Chris Nash still opening?
Couldn't do much worse...
Buttler is not a Test batsman and Curran at number 7 is too high. Having Stokes playing as a frontline batsman is worrying enough. He's grown in maturity but he's no Kallis.
I find it astonishing that there are considered to be no batsmen in the shires ready for a call up. The England team resembles a one day squad.
