KP: "I think it has been a fantastic hour for the SA openers"

39-1

15.1 Woakes to Malan, OUT, oh deary me, that's such a limp dismissal! First ball after drinks, a touch of drift on the outswinger a rash, flat-footed drive, and Stokes plucks a simple take at waist-height!

PJ Malan c Stokes b Woakes 22 (51b 3x4 0x6) SR: 43.13

A pair for Rassie van der Dussen.... it's being reviewed, but was given out

The bounce saves him... just going over.

Christ. That is an awful, awful, awful review. Miles from the bat. England burn their last one

He averages more than Buttler

I can’t see what justification there is for the selection of Buttler. In the past I can sort of see it that there was the promise that he could be some sort of Gilchrist like no7. Those days are long gone.

Foakes must come in for the Sri Lanka series.

Buttler, if he’s serious about playing test cricket again, should go back to his county, ignore 2020 leagues, work on his red ball game and if he scores huge runs could yet come back as a specialist bat. At present though his first class record suggests he is nowhere near a test place.

In my mind we look to have a decent side. We should have enough to win almost all of our tests this year.

Denly and Buttler are the ones in danger, but I think Denly at least get the Sri Lanka series.

In SL the top 6 stays the same
Foakes at 7
Pick our two best spinners. Got to admit, I’m not sure who I’d select
Then rotate in and out, 2 out of Broad, Curran, Woakes and Wood. I’d leave Archer at home.

After the SL series, Burns probably comes back in, most likely for Denly

Dom Bess and the four eyed c***, as Stokes probably calls him, deserve to be persevered with.

Buttler only got into the team because our top order was abject. Now we have The Adverbs plus Root back in form it is a no-brainer to bring back Foakes, especially as Buttler's keeping has been shown in this series NOT to be test class.

Foakes is easily a better keeper but struggling with the bat.

Could probably bat him at 9 ?

Denly has been decent, but I think overall his age will go against him.

England are touring India next winter so turning wickets and glove skills at a premium. With a couple of tests in Sri Lanka coming up that's the perfect opportunity to acclimatise the new man. I imagine Foakes would fit in well with Surrey teammates Pope and Curran in the middle order too, which should help his batting.

Would probably help him to bat 8 or 9 and not have the added pressure of having to score more runs than Buttler/Bairstow (not difficult).

All 3 of our keepers seem to be in shocking form with the bat.

There's something wonderfully old fashioned about the idea of your keeper at 9, but if Curran or Woakes are better with the bat than Foakes than so be it
