Was anybody serious about enforcing the follow-on with that much time still left in the game?

England's second innings was a great opportunity for the new batsmen to get some low pressure runs and to entertain The Barmy Army.

Root has his critics but he's got a lot right in this series. It's amazing the effect that a Top 3 that can actually score runs can have on a No. 4 batsman.

England's second innings was a great opportunity for the new batsmen to get some low pressure runs and to entertain The Barmy Army.

Root has his critics but he's got a lot right in this series. It's amazing the effect that a Top 3 that can actually score runs can have on a No. 4 batsman.

I think at the end of the second day, enforcing the follow on was a realistic prospect. We were 300 + up and they had 6 down. If we'd have knocked their last few batsmen over very cheaply, then I'd have enforced the follow on, but as soon as they got close to the follow on target and it was clear that dire weather predictions were less likely to materialise, then batting became the best option.

Also remember that against a weak SA attack without a spinner, having to chase a small target on the last day wouldn't have been that risky.

We'd have won comfortably either way
