Everything England do on the field is hampered by, or in spite of, Southgate.

1-nil down at Wembley with 15 mins to go and it felt like I was watching an Over 50s walking football match at Southwick Leisure Centre.
He's your quintessential FA appointed English manager, safe in that he won't say anything controversial, mediocre tactics, middle class, and he does bare minimum to keep his job. (despite a very talented squad) and he's boring.

Foden didn't touch the ball in the Brazil area

Why do the FA continue with this clown.
Comments below redacted - KG was referring to Southgate as the clown not Foden. Apologies @Kinky Gerbil

Wow.

Foden is absolute class. But you have to feed a goat.

The absolute shite on the pitch yesterday were Gallumper and Shitwell. They did enough to snap all hope in half.

Most of the rest was OK but you cant' expect to drive a mid priced car to São Paulo with two flat tyres.

Can't say I'm a massive Gallagher fan, but how can you expect him to perform when you ask him to do a different job to the one he does for his club everyweek?

He's not a holding midfielder, I don't think I saw him get forward once.

The players are set up to fail

I wouldn't be shocked if he's doing it on purpose so he can recall Henderson

I agree they are set up to fail, but I was replying to your assertion that Foden is a 'clown'.

Gallagher played last night just like he always does. Charges about all over the place, keeps the ball slightly better than Anthony Knockaert, commits fouls

And he has already recalled Henderson. He's in the squad right now.

Apart from that, I'm with you 110%

I think the clown he is referring to might be Southgate.

Southgate being the clown

Henderson recalled to the starting 11

Just depressed about the whole thing, he's wasted/wasting an unreal squad

Our squad depth is the best in the world I imagine

OK, I misread it as you were calling Foden a clown. All is now clear.

Agree with the rest.

I assume he will start with dunk and stones against Belgium?

why is it that these players are world beaters for their clubs, and completely clueless for england?

this is not just the palace twat, this has been like it for years!

maybe we should realise that English players are just good with foreign players around them? We still hark back to the 1966 generation but when all is said and done, we have won absolutely nothing since then and maybe we are just habitual losers!

Walker/Stones/Foden/Bellingham/Kane etc etc all play for front foot and attacking teams

The only players that play any form of counter attacking/low block football at club level that Started last night are Pickford and Maguire.

Pickford is a keeper, so won't really affect him

So we have 9 out of 10 outfield players that at club level play a certain way then Southgate is then trying to get them to play completely differently, no wonder they look completely lost.

It's almost as if the last 5-10 years development of Premier league football has completely passed him by

And most top teams have sussed that you need a Keeper who can play football, so I think Pickford's effects are felt throughout the team.

You have perfectly described Gallagher. He runs around all over the pitch committing fouls. That's his game. The Scottish hacker, McTominay, is performing better than Gallagher this season. That sums up his level.
The reason Waistcoat plays him is that he can't conceive of playing without 2 holding midfielders and he is desperate for an alternative to Phillips and the Saudi messiah.

Is it because Waistcoat plays a different style to most of the (good) EPL teams? Look at how many times Dunk had the ball last night and had no good forward pass on. I saw him collect the ball, look, move forward a few yards, look, rinse and repeat.

Only happened because he realised he had a world class CDM called Moises he’d been ignoring on the bench.
This. From Arsenal away to the end of that season he actually had Bissouma, Caicedo, Mac Allister and Mwepu and played them all.

De Zerbi has a better home record this season and has beaten three giants of European football with a midfield that basically consists of Billy Gilmour.

Was Groß not playing this season?

His position as national manager means he hasn't been directly impacted by the changes in top flight domestic football.

Our riches in attacking midfield continue to be wasted by a manager who prefers not losing than trying to win.

Inspirational masterpieces are rarely created by conventional safe pairs of hands.

Water under the bridges Potter was never going to keep his status as our worst manager. When he came we were 1 Sala goal away from well deserved relegation we had the oldest squad in the league and none of our players getting better. One year later all of us share the feeling we can go places. I dont think we should go back to Potter (but rather him than many others) but our history books will have a lot of nice words about the Ashcroft and Potter era
I find it utterly bizarre that anyone even talks of ‘going back’ to Potter, clearly not understanding how our football has progressed and changed for the better with each successive manager - and why on earth would anyone think that a Club owned by Tony Bloom would even need to resort to replacing managers from the past when the whole development philosophy of the Club has been to always have a target list of near-ideally suited replacements sorted for every top position in the Club before the current position is even vacated? (That goes for players too within the sustainability framework of recruitment).

Southgate is not likely to be going anywhere anyway either until after the Euros so his leaving is still speculative until his contract winds down in the Autumn (or unless Man U come knocking in the summer of course) and we are not going to be replacing Roberto with Potter, Pep, Klippity or ETH (although any of those 4 could be a target by the FA for England imo)

Dont know nearly enough European football to tell how many suitable managers we can find out there but if the option is Rosenior or anything else from Championship I dont think going back to Potter is bizarre. Quiet calm developing players playing possession football honestly not much less suited for us now than in the first place but I hope and think we go with another continental manager

Dunk wasn’t at his best but I cannot understand the clamour for Branthwaite. He plays for a struggling team who play horrible football which means he has to do a lot of defending. I’d like to think England want to play good football. Branthwaite has shown no evidence that he’s any good at playing out from the back.
